The list enabled me to pack, without thinking, for any piece I was likely to do. Notice the deliberate anonymity of costume: in a skirt, a leotard, and stockings, I could pass on either side of the culture. Notice the mohair throw for trunk-line flights (i.e., no blankets) and for the motel room in which the air conditioning could not be turned off. Notice the bourbon for the same motel room. Notice the typewriter for the airport, coming home: the idea was to turn in the Hertz car, check in, find an empty bench, and start typing the day's notes. It should be clear that this was a list made by someone who prized control, yearned after momentum, someone determined to play her role as if she had the script, heard her cues, knew the narrative. There is on this list one significant omission, one article I needed and never had: a watch.” I needed a watch not during the day, when I could turn on the car radio or ask some-one, but at night, in the motel. Quite often I would ask the desk for the time every half hour or so, until finally, embarrassed to ask again, I would call Los Angeles and ask my husband. In other words I had skirts, jerseys, leotards, pullover sweater, shoes, stockings, bra, night-gown, robe, slippers, cigarettes, bourbon, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, Basis soap, razor, deodorant, as-pirin, prescriptions, Tampax, face cream, powder, baby oil, mohair throw, typewriter, legal pads, pens, files and a house key, but I didn't know what time it was. This may be a parable, either of my life as a reporter during this period or of the period itself.

The Toper. by B Ferdinand Bol (c. 1650–1) Oil on canvas.

Ferdinand Bol joined Rembrandt’s workshop in Amsterdam in 1637, and probably remained there until he set up as an independent painter around 1642. The Toper (a drinker or drunkard) is shown in the costume of an early sixteenth-century knight wearing a gold medallion of Saint George. In the nineteenth century the picture was thought to be by another follower of Rembrandt, Jan Victors, and to depict the imprisoned Arnold, Duke of Guelders (1423–1473). The intensity of the facial characterisation has led some to speculate that the picture is a self-portrait, although the picture does not resemble Bol’s known Self-Portrait (1653; private collection). The Toper is in fact a typical character-piece, or tronie, in the Rembrandt manner and may be compared with other half-length figures leaning from windows by Rembrandt and Bol. Bol used this type of pose for an elaborate series between 1644 and 1653, and the present picture is generally thought to date from this period, c. 1650–1.

Standard rookie error, but I was only 14 so cut me some slack - it was a fairly decent shot otherwise. What are you, perfect or something?

A wall in the former Bankside Power Station. Concrete with 10 circular holes. Part of the wall is painted and has the numbers 1181-1260 painted on it. These refer to the lockers below which are just visible. Some history: The Tate Modern was built on the site of the former Bankside Power Station, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and constructed between 1947 and 1963. After the power station was decommissioned in 1981, it was converted into a modern art gallery through an international competition in 1994. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron won the project, stripping the building back to its steel and brick structure to create the main galleries from the boiler house and the turbine hall.
