While it doesn't solve the game design issue, it might give you some tools to help you deal with it.

Personally I shorthand it to "Up, Middle, Down" and you can write down the sequence as U M D U D, or leave out the first one if you preposition for it.

Two things I found that help:

Preposition for the first one, so you only have to remember four. Then only memorize the spot you want to go to, even if there's 2 options.

Have a pen and paper ready, write down the sequence of safe spots so all you have to do is consult your notes.
