St. Lou was the original slacker town back then. So conservative, but cheap rents with lots of affordable housing. The place was filled with perpetual grad students and artists, you just had to look for them.
I remember driving from St Louis to Kansas City a bunch of years ago and stopped and off at a museum dedicated to the proposition that Elvis is, in fact, alive. It was pretty much a bunch of blurry photos.
