1/ Can AI be conscious? My Behavioral & Brain Sciences target article on ‘Conscious AI and Biological Naturalism’ is now open for commentary proposals. Deadline is June 12. Take-home: real artificial consciousness is very unlikely along current trajectories. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

This is my PhD thesis

I did not ask for this

I did not consent to this

I did not approve of this

I was not compensated for this

I would not have advised this

I do not like this

And worst of all, the number of people who've read my thesis has still not increased.
Email saying "An AI created a podcast of your paper"

Said paper is my PhD dissertation, "The Role of The Hippocampus In Configural Learning"

Fails to mention: "and was a really nice person to boot."🤩

My Doctorvater's PhD involved building an omnidirectional treadmill for dewinged flies to demo spatial cognition. Postdoc on Bayesian sensory cue integration because he liked computers. TT on object recog because psychophysics was boring.

It is not elitist to value education.

Many of us chose to give up comfort pleasures and career security for higher education. I am an immigrant, with working class parents, who scrubbed toilets to pay undergrad tuition.

As a foreign student, I did not have the finances (after paying tuition) to visit my family during my entire studies. Having my immigration status revoked willy-nilly would have ruined my future.

Thousands of International Students Will See Their Immigration Status
Restored, Government Says

Thousands of international students studying in the United States whose immigration status was revoked by the Department of Homeland Security this month may now see that status restored.
On Friday, lawyers for the Trump administration said at a hearing that the Department of Justice planned to reactivate the immigration status of students whose status had recently been revoked, several media outlets reported. Many of the students whose status the government revoked have already left the country. The unprecedented scale and lack of clear explanation for these changes left other students fearful that they might be next.

But signs that the Trump administration was backing down appeared on Thursday when some college administrators doing their regular check of the government database known as SEVIS to see if any new students lost their status noticed something new, according to one, who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized by their college to speak to the media. Several students’ immigration status had been restored. When they checked a few hours later, in some cases, several more students’ status had been restored.

More than 4,700 students saw their immigration status terminated in the first two weeks of April, according to statistics shared with The Chronicle, jeopardizing their ability to remain in the United States legally. Many of the students had had small interactions with law enforcement, such as speeding tickets or other infractions. But some said they had not had any infractions and others said that they had never been charged or charges against them had been dismissed.

Hundreds of students sued the government, saying their offenses, if they had any, did not warrant the government pulling their ability to continue their studies in the United States. (The Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration also brought a lawsuit.) So far, those students have notched wins in court. Last week, a federal judge in Georgia ordered the Department of Homeland Security to restore the immigration status for 133 students.

The revelation of a large-scale change in policy came Friday morning, when a U.S. Attorney told a judge at a federal hearing for another of these cases that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will reactivate the status for the students and recent graduates whose status they had recently changed. WUSA9 reported that the att…

If any journalists are writing about the recent NSF cancellations, I can give you a good example of a grant that was framed as AI workforce development (and is not about misinformation) that seems as if it was cancelled due to a control-F for the word misinformation.

I do not share your faith in the masses' ability to self-govern (overnight). If we are evolving, it is a slow process and perhaps we'll see viable systems emerge beyond my lifetime.

Human civilization seems to gravitate towards needing individual figures, to personify common values and shared ideals.

Such institution(s) should be done away with, but I'm not sure what we would replace it with, without risking organized society.

IMO Pope Francis was a suitable role model.
