i quite like father figure on this album because i think it's about her old label head and also exploring the archetype of the sleazy executive taking advantage of young starlets overall - alas then comes eldest daughter which is one of my least favourites on the album - so i do find it a mixed bag

the first half took a lot longer to grow on me than the second half - most of the first half is deeply unflattering but i think that's deliberate, though again, i can't imagine admitting to the shit she owns up to there lol

oh god yeah absolutely. the manuscript is devastating, and thank you aimee is so trite. i also love the prophecy as like, really looking at herself and saying "am i so desperate for storybook love that i've gone full delulu on main. why do i keep humiliating myself like this and why can't i stop"

she admits things about herself on that album i would never admit about myself and i gotta respect that tbh. fresh out the slammer, guilty as sin, and i can fix him (no really i can) are just self-owns, and those aren't even close to my favourites on the album.

yeah, I can definitely see that. I think for me. how I feel about it depends on the historical power dynamic with the subject of the song - stuff about the head of her old label, or about john mayer dating her when she was 19 and he was 32, I don't mind her digging up because I imagine those are

though (i'm sorry this thread is getting so long) i do also think some of her best writing in this regards is on ttpd, despite its bad reception - imo that album is way more critical and scouring of taylor herself than of any subject or muse

i guess more what i meant my my original post is that i think her autobiographical writing can be strong, but needs to be more self-reflective than declarative to really resonate - when she uses autobiography to sit with uncomfortable truths about herself rather than to point fingers

yeah, I really wish that had been more of a generic "kiss off to the haters" sort of song. She may well have more beef with Charli behind the scenes - I don't know! - but in public it does feel like punching down

what's interesting i think is that folklore and evermore are nowadays believed to be largely autobiographical, just disguised as fictional - but i think the album definitely gives away how insular and un-relatable her world has become, especially while apparently writing this album during the tour
