Not fully happy but I dunno if I want to to fiddle more with it or call it done.

Tried a bunch of new stuff with it already so may quit while I'm ahead.

Fantasy setting Monica doing her thing. Pondering if I want to make this her new default setting instead of Modern.

Art of Monica Hall (a half-elf/half-dwarf bard) sliding onto a bench in a tavern to serenade three women with her lute. The women seem to be enjoying the performance, as well as the view she is providing by wearing a sleeveless vest with no shirt beneath it.

Queen of the Underworld.

On foot, over land. The bulk of the story is them trying to keep one step away from her uncle's forces, navigating through the growing civil war and trying to get to a friendly neighboring country to request aid.

As it goes along, they grow closer and eventually- romance. Simple, but I like it.

During the final day's celebration, or maybe the day after I'm not sure yet, the queen's older brother attempts a bit of a coup. The capital sent into disarray, his forces seizing the palace but the queen escapes on a ship.

Katherina saves Lynnari from the soldiers coming to kill her, and they run.
lgooms.bsky.social
Katherina returns when she is 20 and Lynnari is 18, and they have an immediately charged reaction to seeing one another. It's the start of the queen's tricennial celebration though, so nothing can come of it yet.

Katherina competes in the tournament and wins, and gets knighted at the end.

I'm rewriting the entire thing, but the core is the same.

Princess Lynnari was childhood friends with a girl two years older than her, Katherina. Feelings grew in the way that they manifest among preteens, but then Katherina became a knight's squire and had to leave as the knight traveled.

I'd want to be Monica permanently, so to avoid the disappointment of having to turn back I'll say Varda instead.

Being an 8' tall indestructible alien bodyguard would be pretty cool for a little while. The "emits deadly radiation" and "might accidentally crush anything with her strength" less so.

Bouncing nobles from the palace needs a bit more nuance than just tossing them out the door like they were a rowdy drunk in a tavern.

Nuance doesn't have to mean subtle, though. Just enough propriety above the subtext to remain plausibly respectful.

Being tossed out might be less scary.
Releasing the young man's shoulder, Katherina stepped forward to open the door for him. He rubbed feeling back into his arm while hurriedly bowing his head repeatedly. "Thank you for the escort, Ser Katherina. For certain I would have not found my own way back here so easily."

Katherina nodded. "Of course, Lord Esmir. Do have a safe journey home. Please express my well wishes to your father and mother. I hope Lord Guthyr and Lady Carmin enjoyed the festivities."

Before he could respond, Katherina continued. "As well to your sisters Ladies Sylel and Verona, and your brother Lord Hanol. It is a shame they could not attend. Though, one could not expect Lady Verona to travel at this time. You are newly an uncle, yes? My congratulations. I am certain you shall be a responsible one."

Her steady gaze stayed locked on his eyes as she spoke, her face neutral. Right hand still casually resting on the pommel of the sword on her right hip.

The young nobleman swallowed noticeably, hands wringing nervously, his own eyes darting about to look anywhere else. "Y-yes, I am. Thank you very much. I... shall strive to be. And... I... shall pass your kind words along to them. Thank you again. Have a pleasant evening, Ser Katherina."

Then he was hurrying away- speeding up slightly when he looked over his shoulder to see Katherina still watching him from the doorway.

If Kath and Lynna were literally out of commission though, as in: died in the coup? Boy oh boy, there'd be a lot more wrath involved.

Already the queen has a rather nasty end in mind for her traitor brother, but if he had managed to kill her daughter? Yikes, dude. Run. Run, and don't look back.
lgooms.bsky.social
The B team would be the queen (Lynna's mom), Elena (Kath's mom), Ser Sunea, and Captain Evari as they escape from the attempted coup on the Tenebrous. Gathering loyal forces, bringing allies in, etc. A lot more political, though there'd still be romance since those four make up two couples.

Let's talk about the B team!

If your main characters were out of commission, which of your side characters do you think would step up to continue your story?

Who could carry the narrative? Who would want to?

It really made me wrestle with the idea that I am solely responsible for the contents of this person's entire life in a way that I hadn't considered before.

I'm sorry your crow tat originated from such a lonely place, Monica! I made up for it with the other birds though, right? Right!?
lgooms.bsky.social
Absolutely. It's a nightmare. It was legitimately easier getting my own tattoos than it was coming up with Monica's.

When all you have for seven years are pleasant childhood memories of a person, it can be a shock once you're face to face with them again.

Hopefully it's a pleasant surprise.
"H-hello, Kath."

Katherina stared at the gorgeous sight in front of her, momentarily struck dumb. She had not been expecting this at all. She had only intended to visit her mother briefly, having obtained some free time after being dismissed by Ser Sunea. At this sudden sight of the princess, all her time spent planning and thinking about this very moment instantly vanished from her brain.

Her last memories of Princess Lynnari had been of a joyful, kind, funny, demanding, extraordinarily intelligent, somewhat spoiled eleven year old girl. A girl she had become immensely fond of over their shared childhood. Her best friend, it would be fair to say. She remembered long, dark red hair that flowed behind her as they played in the palace gardens. Remembered her heart soaring when she heard the squealing, delighted laughter that came in response to Katherina's silly, made-up stories. Remembered piercing cyan blue eyes that tried to burn through anyone who got in the way of what the girl wanted, and often succeeded. They were all aspects of her childhood friend that she had missed dearly over the last seven years away from Saelia.

But standing in front of her now was a fully grown woman. An incredibly fully grown woman. It was hard to imagine they were even the same person.

We are absolutely getting home, because Captain Evari is a former pirate-now captain in the Saelian navy. She has contacts literally everywhere, so half the ships on the ocean would be searching for her.

And there'd be a lot of ships, since if the Tenebrous vanishes then Saelia will be mobilizing.
lgooms.bsky.social
Since it's an island and not the wilderness, would have to go with Evari Farrar, the captain of the Tenebrous.

She'd have the skills to keep us alive and the patience to teach me how to do stuff, plus she'd be fun to hang out with. As much as I like Kath, she's not a great conversationalist.

You are shipwrecked on a desert island. You can choose one of your characters to have with you.

Who are you choosing, and what skills do they bring to the table?

Do you think the two of you are getting home?

Not much hunting in this. Only mention is a noble's son falling off his horse and getting his feelings hurt.

Happy birthday, princess! Your present is to listen to the demands of spoiled rich people for several hours.
Any enthusiasm that Lynnari had felt for the day swiftly vanished in the sea of official duties that the imminent tricennial required. After only a few hours, a headache that had been growing behind her right eyebrow all morning was making it hard to concentrate.

Her mother had placed her in charge of the seating arrangements for the feasts that would be happening every evening. "A test of your social management and organizational skills," the queen had said. The deceptively simple task had quickly turned into a nightmare as the logistics of handling the often volatile personalities of Saelia's nobility made itself plain.

Weeks of research and planning, followed by re-planning when the nobles began to arrive and made their own additional requests in person. Under the polite guise of giving Lynnari thanks for the hospitality, of course.

Lord Candrol nol Draedir cannot be at the same table as Lady Veralis nol Tilton due to their second cousins having had a romantic falling out five years prior. Lady Ponveri nol Adaria must be seated next to her wife, but insists their son be seated elsewhere in order to facilitate the growth of his social independence- but neither can be seated near Lord Bedalli nal Errinel because his son holds a grudge over being embarrassed from falling off his horse during a hunting expedition the two boys participated in.

And on. And on. And on.

Lynnari needed to take a break from hearing the demands of the pettiest, most tedious people she had ever met. And she needed to do something about this unbearable headache.
