I'm co-facilitating a learning community this year & one of the profs off-handedly mentioned how they've tried to make their course as tech-free as possible.

Which is not a new idea, but it's interesting because of WHO said it. It wasn't someone who never learned tech tools in the 1st place ...

When my wife posts on Bluesky, she calls it “fluttering,” and I think we should all go with that.

Y'all, we need to work harder on including salary ranges in job posts.

And if you think there's a policy preventing that, ask questions of both HR & Finance to make sure that's really, really true. We used to not post them & now we do because questions were asked.

(And no, I'm not on the hunt. 😁)

Reminder that the Gmail Snooze button is a handy tool this time of year.

Some things are getting snoozed till December 16 for a deep work retreat but a lot are snoozing till January.

I used to keep things in the inbox till handled, but switching to snooze has been a great anxiety management tool!

Tonight at the ARC bar, #POD24 friends! It's just a fun, clique-averse get-together to hang out and see each other. I'm just a bit too scattered to do all the PR for it. All are welcome!
#POD24 friends and colleagues: Don’t forget about the annual, not-very-well-organized-completely-unofficial POD hangout at the hotel bar at 8:00 on the Monday of the conference!

Alright goofballs, here’s the POD Conference day 1 fit. Come find me! Even if we don’t know each other in real life! We can hug if you want! We are maximizing dopamine right now to prepare for whatever comes next in the fight.

Hi #POD24 friends. Are you maybe a little tired this week (month..year..years) like I am?

If so, join me in making conference decisions that are about your joy/peace/other personally-meaningful noun. This is not a time to “get your money’s worth.”

Whatever comes next needs us rested and grounded.

So, I made it through the beginning of the school year as a new (unplanned) executive director, through a catastrophic hurricane and its lingering effects, and through my last conference directing, all without a migraine. It seems the election was the straw that broke the camel's back, though ...

I get that compliance can be a useful tool in maintaining access so good work can continue.

But compliance becomes complicity much faster than we think. And I'm pretty sure no one realizes they've made the switch until it's too late.

I don't care about sportsball but people in my life do, so basketball brackets: engaged!

I did one based on the relative sassiness of the mascots (which involved MANY google image searches). And another based on the aesthetics of university homepages (many more searches).

Obviously, I will win. 😆

I opened applications for our summer Course ReDesign institute 24 hours ago. We've got competition this year as others are starting to follow both our timing and compensation models. Good, but also 😳

Well, I just checked and we already have 20 applicants, including representation from all colleges!

If your job relies on people "buying in" before doing what you want (learning, buying a product, etc), please read The Art of Gathering.

This is not a new book nor rec, but I continue to be stunned by the way people start things (Zooms, classes) in ways that ignore this wisdom. (🫠 in a webinar)

"This is the first math class I've taken where I don't feel stupid." - heard in my class today 🥰

(Last time—prob ever—I'm teaching a stats course, and this is really my only learning objective. That everyone comes to believe that they can do stats. That stats is just story-telling with numbers.)

Today in my Teaching and Student Success Lab (TASSL), my students will be completing an analysis of student evals for an instructor (something we provide by request).

But of course I'm not going to let this opportunity to cause good trouble go to waste. 😈

Look y’all. I don’t care a bit about sportsball. But the first official commercial of this sports match was for a freakin’ musical, and that feels like a win.🪄

If you saw a list of faculty/ed development offerings and one of the sections on that list was "Courses" what would you expect those offerings would consist of?

And how would those offerings be different from other things on that list?

Would a week-long course design institute go there?

Back from the beach & ready for dry January, meaning a sabbatical from alcohol & all social media for at least the next month. If you need me, text, email, or messenger. And maybe don’t expect a speedy response on any of those cause I’m working on turning down the noise and turning up the signal.✌🏻
January 1, 2024 at 9:31 PM
I don't get to put up my out-of-office responder till next Friday, but I *really* want to say something like, "Do not expect an email response until January 2nd, because there is no such thing as an educational development emergency." 😬

I will never understand people who dump on “grade grubbing” students.

Grade grubbing is a very logical reaction to the very illogical system that students are subjected to.
December 12, 2023 at 1:18 PM
And with that, I just submitted my last set of grades EVER for the Intro to School Psych course I've taught for 10 years. I have one more course to teach in that grad program in the Spring, and then I am shifting over fully to ed dev and teaching first-year seminars. What a ride!
