In our latest episode we get enthusiastic about figuring out Proto-Indo-European with @dannybate.bsky.social!

Before there was English, or Latin, or Czech, or Hindi, there was a language that they all have in common, which we call Proto-Indo-European. Linguists have long been fascinated by the quest to get a

If our recent interview with @dannybate.bsky.social about Proto-Indo-European got you excited about reconstructing languages, there's more!

Check out this episode from the archives on more proto-languages and what we can and cannot know about ancient peoples from comparing modern languages:

Not gonna lie, I made us make these scarves as merch because I don't wear t-shirts with words on them and I was tired of nerdy t-shirts getting all the nerdwear love

(Btw, this time of year is a great time for merch shopping because redbubble is often running sales)
Throwback to launching our very first merch this time in 2017 (!!)

Silky scarves with characters from the International Phonetic Alphabet on them!

Originally only in red, navy, and olive these scarves became so popular we later expanded to other colours and subfields

I read the transcript and this guy's Ph.D. sounds really cool! And also--even when word order is not conveying syntactic information (as is the case in e.g. Japanese) it still often conveys prosodic information (e.g. what's important? what's new?)

Tbh this whole list of podcasts are either shows I've already enjoyed listening to or things I immediately want to add to my podcast app so this is lovely company to be in!
Just found out we've made this list of "real, credentialed experts thinking outside the ivory tower and making occasionally opaque topics like history, philosophy & science accessible and engaging for the general public" from @ceaubin.com on @pocketcasts.com!

I haven't had such a great time watching linguistics singing and dancing since last year's "I put the glamour/back into grammar" video
This is a thoroughly delightful video from some linguists in Finland marrying Finnish etymology with Finnish folk dancing and even if you know nothing about any of these things their enthusiasm is contagious
