For info - if you are sending me DMs I can’t read them because Bluesky wants me to confirm my age via face scan. I refuse to do this. If you want to contact me directly I still have access to Twitter (ew) direct messaging.

Linguistics in the wild on Reddit!

This phenomena comes under the general study of nominal flexibility. Often referred to as “grinding”, when a singular count noun in English has no article (a), this leads to a “stuff” reading. Compare (1), which is grammatical:

1. There is dog all over the road!

Ahhhh my maternity cover as a lecturer at QMUL is coming to an end. Had a blast, been inspired by some excellent students… no into the next adventure!

[if you know of postdocs/positions in formal semantics hit me up 🙏🏼 or if you wanna start a podcast with me because that’s what millennials do hehe]

Hello to all the new followers who are #Cymraeg / #Welsh enthusiasts like myself 🥰

While you’re here, may I suggest you pop over and listen to my episode on @dannybate.bsky.social’s podcast A Language I Love Is? It’s a good 40 minutes of us just loving Cymraeg!

I did it, I actually bloody did it

You'd have said it was a stupid idea to research and write a book in four months, with a twenty-six chapters and a ticking clock

And you'd be right, it was a stupid idea

But I did it anyway

And just like that, #lagb2024 is over! I’ve met some old friends and made some new ones. As always, LAGB is the nicest conference around. Everybody wants you to succeed.

Also, I learned some cool new things, my personal favourite about Greek gender agreement patterns :D

I’m at #LAGB this week and today I learnt about Sinhala phonology and French gender inclusive doublets and how ‘phonemic fluctuation’ is not a thing (thanks racism) and that you can’t necessarily grind all nouns into gross flesh and people in Whalsey use fancy prepositions and I ate too many crisps
