Buzzing (figuratively) to have my Hidden Curriculum blog posted today, I really enjoyed writing it!

Have a read to find out why I think the research culture we actively create helps or hinders equitable access to the hidden curriculum 👇

This initiative is not competitive. It's a public thank you to those at the University of Edinburgh who make research better for everyone.

Who has positively impacted your research experience? Who has helped you navigate challenges or thrive in your role? Who has shared opportunities, or made things more inclusive, accessible or navigable?

Behind each of these examples are people. Our colleagues who put time and effort in to making our working environments better

However, this means our focus is often shifted away from the pockets of really good stuff. The inclusive, ethical and sustainable practices, supportive environments and transparent processes. These examples are important too and we can learn from them.

When we talk about #ResearchCulture, it's often about the less positive side of things. Which is important, as it can help us identify the problems in order to make positive changes.

Fair point: “Sometimes there’s an expectation that simply inserting a narrative CV will result in long-term impacts...without having to address any barriers to achieving this in all the other steps of the process, such as interviews". Excellent quotes from @profrachelgan.bsky.social too!

❓And if you're wondering what InFrame and the Culture Catalyst Fund are: here's a poster I created for Edinburgh's Research Support Services Conference that explains a little about this collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews.
Introducing InFrame Poster

Text reads:
An inclusive framework for research leadership: testing a new model for creating culture change

The universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews have been awarded £3M from Wellcome to create a new framework for inclusive research leadership – InFrame.

Our collaboration aims to understand how collegiality can be fostered, recognised and rewarded, as well as expanding the definition of who is viewed as a research leader .

The InFrame project started in September 2024, led at Edinburgh by Prof. Christina Boswell and Dr Sara Shinton.

Meet the Edinburgh Team:
- Ros Attenborough, Evaluation Manager
- Lisa Backwell, Community Knowledge Analyst
- Francesca Pagni, Leadership Developer
- Theoni Massaara, Project Coordinator
- Andrew Unwin, Community Knowledge Manager
- Sara Shinton, Institutional Lead

InFrame has three work packages:

1. Collegial Research Leadership Framework: we will develop a toolkit that applies across all roles and job families.
2. Culture Catalyst Fund: funding to support new ideas from anyone seeking to make change in research cultures, testing and developing the co-created framework.
3. Community Knowledge Hub: bespoke pre- and post- award support and critical cross-linking of funded projects.

Changing Research Cultures at the University of Edinburgh: InFrame will support and mainstream initiatives towards a positive research culture, which in turn supports our capacity to deliver world-leading research.

Our approach
1. Building evidence to inform decision-making
2. Embedding sustainable change, overcoming barriers
3. Building trust that the culture work is responding to the people who experience our cultures

💬 It's been an incredibly motivating start to my job getting to talk with so many people who are passionate about equity, access, inclusion and community building. People who want to #PutPolicyIntoPractice #SetTheTone and #ChangeWhatCounts

🕸️ I've met researchers, students and research enabling & adjacent staff and noticed how often similar themes such as community building come up. We've been connecting people with similar interests together and I'm excited to see how this web of culture change leaders grows
lisabackwell.bsky.social
I provide support to potential funded applicants to help shape their ideas into sustainable and receivable culture change projects capable of leaving a legacy.
