As a lot of people seem to be talking about Ozymandias for some reason, I thought it might be appropriate to share my single named for the Shelley poem about him. open.spotify.com/track/1SSGXz...

Very very much so. And perhaps his dying relatively young will over time add to this. I’m enjoying the interview by the way! You definitely did your research. That portal in the old fella’s house in West Kerry is pretty mindblowing, too.

I read somewhere and I’ll paraphrase here that Manchán Magan may prove to be the most import cultural Irish figure of the first half of the 21st century. I think that’s likely true. He’s missed by all who had the good fortune to cross paths with him

I’ll track that one down

I had the pleasure of taking with Manchán a couple of years back. His loss is immense. I believe his ashes are being scattered at Uisneach tomorrow.

Glad I had the opportunity to capture something of his story

S5E3: Manchán Magan - Deep Rooted In Irish Culture
For over 25 years Manachán Magan has been at the forefront of Irish cultural affairs. He first rose to public attention with the 1996 launch of Irish language telev…

Oh that would have been amazing! And yes, a fitting place, for someone who had pretty much become the heart of Ireland! I had missed hearing about his cancer, so when he died I was shocked as well as devastated. He would have made an excellent president, had he lived longer.
Have you seen Éirí Amach Amú? (Also on TG4, directed by Ruán Mangan, & there’s a cameo by Manchán Magan towards the end) There’s a scene where Dev arrives at the GPO & someone asks him something along the lines of “what sort of name is de Valera anyway”, & he says his father was Spanish. Great film!
It only goes as far as the two Marys (I think it’s from 2007 or something?) but it’s a fab series, lots of interviews and historic footage as well. And yeah! He would already have been looked at as suspicious with his surname! It might well also have given him the incentive to succeed.

2) In modern Ireland, that controversy would now be viewed as an absurdity.

During the first half of the 20th century, in a country dominated by regressive Catholicism, the specter of “illegitimacy” would likely have been a barrier to political success

I’ve been watching the brilliant TG4 series, ‘Uachtaráin’ and I was telling my husband, not five minutes ago, about the show, which led to a conversation about Dev’s paternity and how he did so well for himself in that day and age.

Maybe they should watch Russell Crowe’s new Nuremberg movie when it comes out next week. Just some helpful advice.

I was thinking how it was rather cool that CMAC was elected, a nice callback to CMAT stopping BA standing up.

Catherine's victory shows how we might finally defeat the FFG stranglehold. When a broad left unite for a common purpose the majority of the voting public will support them.
I'd love to see this Left Coalition continuing beyond this Presidential election.
