🧵 1/ Since the carefully crafted walls of secrecy about all that was known about #LongCovid #PCC by public health & government officials are starting to crack, I thought I’d share, in order, the pieces I’ve written to date on this subject as it relates to British Columbia 🇨🇦…

So, I did some digging.
The Special Advisory Committee on #COVID19- the force behind our federal/provincial/territorial pro-infection pandemic train since January 2020- was indeed a tangled web w/an overlapping power hierarchy held by a very few.
🧵A thread..

It’s devastating enough to care for & come to terms w/a loved one w/dementia, & quite another to have to basically advocate with a brick wall for what, in many cases, is their life or death protection.

I’m so sorry for all you’ve been thru.💔
littleann4ever.bsky.social
It’s criminal that in many HC & LTC settings those tasked with caring for our most vulnerable & ill family members, are allowed, even encouraged, to put them at such grave risk. I’m so very sorry for your devastating loss💔

The deliberate absence of respirator masks in medical settings while Covid-19, a fatal airborne disease, is spreading everywhere, constitutes one of the worst moral scandals of our time. Countless patients have perished, and will continue to perish, as a result of willful negligence.

In examining this list of people fighting *against* protections for infectious diseases, it is worth thinking about the liability (and resulting COIs) that each might be expected hold once it becomes widely recognized that respirators are a reasonable step to protect against aerosol-borne diseases.

Section 217.1 of the Canadian Criminal Code would be a good place to start. The medical professional associations where influential MDs have so many strings to pull have no jurisdiction, and the "get out of jail free" cards provincial politicians use to keep their cronies above the law don't apply.
mark-ungrin.bsky.social
Here's what you'll find at the other end of that link. Now think about the roles those signatories hold, the decisions they've made over the last 5 years, and the fact that hospitals *still* choose not to practice good infection control for bioaerosols.

laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-4...
217.1 Every one who undertakes, or has the authority, to direct how another person does work or performs a task is under a legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm to that person, or any other person, arising from that work or task.

Good question. What I can say is this care facility, like others, is following “Droplet/Contact Precautions” outlined by their regional health authority. Btw, most visitors did wear masks, but many just wore surgical masks that were avail under health authority poster explaining they were optional.

I used the phrase "the time of COVID" to synchronize the combination of rising fascism (& in the U.S., totalitarianism), ascendant Trump/MAGA/Q, a mass traumatizing & disability-creating event (that is still happening, regardless of the existential gaslight) & the rise of A.I. capitalism...

A few weeks ago there was a #Covid19 outbreak on my Mom’s memory care wing. The whole section was quarantined. Family could still visit but before entering a resident’s room, they were req’d to put on full gowns & gloves. They were even told to remove their shoes. But masks were optional.😡
littleann4ever.bsky.social
Thank you 💜 I can never say that she is okay, but at least she got thru it & is back to baseline.
littleann4ever.bsky.social
But beware of your #Covid19 droplet entrenched shoes!
littleann4ever.bsky.social
All the added trauma for vulnerable dementia patients like my Mom, whose anxiety, confusion & fearfulness skyrocket from isolation, is so angering. Because my Mom & the other residents never left their wing. So the only way they were infected was from visitors & staff.

And so the cycle goes.

It's so bad that Canada's Chief Science Advisor had to call out our public health leaders for their failure to do their job and educate the public ("gaps" in messaging)!

But it's hard to get that story out because public health can throw around huge PR slush funds.
science.gc.ca/site/science...
Prevention: There are gaps in public messaging about the importance of PCC prevention. PCC preventive actions include avoiding SARS-CoV-2 infection and reinfection through protective behavior, such as isolating when sick to avoid spreading disease and effective masking in crowded spaces, and making it easy to adopt protective measures through steps that government, institutions and employers can take. Equally important is indoor air quality and ventilation to reduce transmission of infectious diseases that transmit through the air, including SARS-CoV-2, influenza and other common respiratory virusesFootnote46 Footnote47. Adequate ventilation and air filtration is often a key gap in buildings where people gather, including schools.

Another key action along with other measures to prevent PCC is vaccination. There are gaps in messaging about reducing the risk for PCC through vaccination across all ages. COVID-19 vaccination and messaging targeted to priority populations to protect against acute COVID-19 illness may have an unintended consequence of conveying that keeping COVID-19 vaccination up to date for acute and chronic effects is not really necessary for all age groups.

A good time to recall that the people whose job it is to tell you when it's time to wear an N95 to protect yourself against airborne H5N1 just spent 5 years pretending they don't work, to bury their liability for lying and telling you they knew COVID wasn't airborne. 🤷

Episodes like this illustrate why criminal charges are appropriate for the public health and infection control leaders suppressing information about prevention of COVID and long COVID - the "gaps in public messaging" called out by Canada's Chief Science Advisor.

They are killing people.

Which of course, defeats the whole purpose of quarantining a whole wing if visitors are allowed in #Covid19 positive rooms w/o masks & then they leave & saunter on thru other wings, common areas, hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria etc where other patients, visitors & staff are breathing the same air.
littleann4ever.bsky.social
I should add I’m impressed they’re calling an outbreak an outbreak! And still testing for #Covid19, isolating & quarantining even tho it’s excruciating for dementia patients, families & staff. But where they fail spectacularly is following so-called strict infection, prevention & control protocols.

Nobody has Long COVID, but everybody has brain fog, cognitive decline and memory loss. I talk about the overwhelming scientific evidence that COVID damages the brain, and the overwhelming social unwillingness to acknowledge it in my latest:

Joking memes make light of the uncomfortable reality: everyone's got a little of that post-COVID brain damage these days

"Governing vs activism" is a totally false dichotomy, Andrew.

Especially now, when massive inequality has predictably produced oligarchs, fascism, social fraying, & democracy in retreat as Emily Lowan said in her acceptance speech as new @bcgreens.bsky.social leader. "Activism" is loaded 🧵

Sadly, her nomination (with no political/life experience) will ensure
@BCGreens
 are finished. I've enormous respect for her (& she knows that), but her foray into leadership is both unsupportable & premature. She should've got herself elected first.
@BCGreens
 are done #bcpoli

@AJWVictoriaBC
And that is a shame as
@bcndp
 cannot be trusted on environmental issues.

She may say the right things, but that doesn't mean you can implement any of ideas. You cannot govern through activism.

Back in April 2022-right after masks were lifted in schools!-the 🇨🇦 Fed health minister announced that the CIHR was investing 6.7mil into Canada-wide research platform to better understand Covid-19’s impact on children & young people.

Hmm, I wonder what they’ve learned, don’t you? #LongCovidKids
