Hell, I was a Megaman link curator myself for years. People love to volunteer for public goods, given half a chance.

Also, discord has largely supplanted a lot of subject-matter or social forums, moving data out of search and into silos. You can't stumble across something and lurk it, you have to be Invited and Logged In and Present to a Real-Time group, which is categorically different.

I think fb & twitter supplanted forums & blogs bc your grandma was on the former and celebs were on the latter. Now gran is alone with AI slop and celebs have wisely all logged off, so this short-form/no-context format is vestigial. I'd love to return to a longform livejournal, lol.

For "fairness" here's stuff I don't exactly miss from the mid-aughts web: browser toolbar extensions, insecure ActiveX controls, pervasive flash-player embeds.
November 25, 2025 at 8:07 PM
The web was never perfect, but it really used to be a lot more like a library and a lot less like a shopping mall.
November 25, 2025 at 8:04 PM
I've been online since 1995 & take it for granted that others share my memory, but just for any young folks: nobody needed "AI" in the mid-aughts because web search used to work. New "innovations" online today are just inferior version of stuff that's been intentionally sabotaged.

I don't need an AI to draw hands badly -- I've been doing that since I was five years old.
November 24, 2025 at 10:35 PM
Nightshift Galaxy is AI free, as though there was any doubt.

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Cocktail was served with a Sichuan peppercorn fruit, and the waiter said -- and I quote -- "on the street they're calling these 'buzzballs'" [stuck in my head in Ice T's voice, now]

I've prioritized idiosyncratic floating-cursor aiming in Nightshift over generic rotation-based aiming to allow fixed-cameras and other "curated" arcade-style experiences, differentiating from generic shooters and feeling more "shmuppy".
