Education is a human endeavor. Communication is a human right.

I’ll be going through the Communication Bill of Rights in an attempt to get back to basics. Perhaps one a day.

It developed around the rights of communicators with severe disabilities, but it’s a useful framework for thinking about communication in general.

this thread should be shown to every center for teaching and learning that incentivizes "innovation" without ever thinking past the immediate linking of that word and screen-based tech. novelty alone does not guarantee goodness or depth
Spent even more time looking through the most thoughtful integrations of AI into writing instruction that I can find, & despite the clear care and intention being applied to these projects, I do not see advancements in writing pedagogy. I see novelty injected into the production of written artifacts

“Hello,” said Frog.

“Look at my list of things to do,” said Toad.

“Oh,” said Frog, “that is very nice.”

Toad said, “My list tells me that we will go for a walk.”

Happy Groundhog Day! I am a fan of the absurdity of weather prognosticating rodents and celebrate Groundhog Day with my thermochromic linocut. The shadow is visible if the ambient temperature is <30°C and disappears when >30°C (and it’s a safe bet winter is over or you are overheating your home). 🧵

Perhaps we should start by asking, have we actually taught students the basics of writing as a discipline? Particularly in the early grades.

If the relationship to language is social, and if there is a machine that abstracts our language only to re-inscribe it, then that relationship-to-language becomes a “thing” — a manufactured commodity —that overshadows our relationship to language as a participatory social activity

"Teaching with AI is not without value; it is a case study in how even well-meaning educators operating in good faith can become inadvertent agents of a pedagogical de-skilling and institutional dehumanization."

This scathing book review really is worth reading.

Everything* I needed to know about education I learned from disabled preschoolers & primary grade students.

Excellent teachers.

Too much of education becomes ‘rise to my level’ without actual instruction.

I put it in front of you; it’s easy for me, & I learned it at some point; therefore, it will be easy for you to learn it now when you absorb it via osmosis.

No one intends to do this, but it happens a lot.

Day 7.

The Communication Bill of Rights includes:

7. The right to be given—and to understand—information about objects, actions, events, and people.

Provide truthful information people need to know in a language they can understand —that includes avoiding jargon with laypeople.

And on a day with piles of snow outside? Really hits the spot.
