Yesterday I passed my PhD viva, therefore a bio update was needed! The second photo is my thesis abstract & I’m looking forward to sharing forthcoming publications asap - it’s very much time for this work to be out in the world 💪
Screenshot of my updated Bluesky bio following a successful PhD viva exam.

I am now Dr Lauren Cantillon, bio reads: feminist interdisciplinary academic, writing about gender, memory & power via Jewish women’s stories of sexual violence during the Holocaust | teaching critical culture & media studies at department of culture, media & creative industries at King’s College London. My PhD thesis abstract, part of which reads:

A work on gender, memory, and power, this thesis centres on Jewish women's own sense-making of their memories of sexual(ised) violence during the Holocaust as shared in testimony interviews in the holdings of the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive (VHA). The thesis explores what acts women frame as sexualised) violence, how they convey this personal understanding, and what emotions and feelings are present in their disclosures. I highlight the heterogeneity of Jewish women's disclosure practices, from overt to more covert disclosures. Across this continuum, I propose and apply an analytical framework rooted in sensory memory, mediating objects, spatiality, and emotional timescapes which enables me to hear numerous women's disclosures within their Holocaust memory narratives, subverting structures of epistemic injustice that work to obscure women's stories of sexual assault. By theorising haptic sense memory, the thesis demonstrates how personal memories of touch can disrupt euphemistic screening language that conceals the brutalising realities of sexualised) violence in conflict as something banal and of little consequence. It offers memory, Holocaust, genocide, and conflict studies an analytical tool through which to overcome hermeneutical injustices of sexualised) violence. This thesis also makes an empirical contribution to the field of Holocaust studies because the women's disclosures offer fresh insights regarding where and when Jewish women and girls were subjected to sexual(ised) violence across the Holocaust landscape, as well as who did the abusing.

Storytelling for Justice symposium flyer Text describes the Storytelling for Justice symposium, noting that speakers will share old and new knowledges and provoke conversation about how to story and listen in ways that disrupt and interrupt dominant knowledge dynamics, offering alternative, more-than-academic ways of knowing and engaging with communities and commonalities. Keynote speaker is Dr Margaret Harvey.

Obstetric violence is such a horrible, disturbing and heartbreaking thing to read about. Would love to know if Briance terms this as being “examined internally” and if she recalls it through any sensorial descriptions?

He is not just attacking ‘diversity initiatives’. He is being racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic -
all these- clearly implying that a diverse workforce is not as capable or efficient as that made of white heterosexual men. He is disgusting.

had a video flash up on IG of an influencer trying on a pinstripe denim co-ord (can you guess where this is going?), her excited take: “it’s giving cool girl”

*me mentally* it’s giving concentration camp

Today‘s theme in Media 2.0 was media audiences; talking with students about being a ‘subscriber’/‘consumer’/‘fan’ on social media and one talked about how she feels it’s shaped her vocabulary. I asked for an example, she blusters for a moment & and a guy from the back shouts “rizz”. Props props 🫰

Anti-abortion advocates are running ads to find & encourage men to betray and sue their partners. This makes me sick. wapo.st/40nfmD2
Antiabortion advocates look for men to report their partners' abortions

Boyfriends and husbands can have uniquely personal and specific information necessary to help surface new lawsuits in states with abortion bans. This partner-focused approach will shift to a more public phase next month when Texas's largest antiabortion organization launches an advertising campaign on Facebook and X to reach the husbands, boyfriends and sex partners of women who have had abortions in the state - with the goal of recruiting them to file lawsuits against those who assisted the women in ending their pregnancies.

Excellent article about the rift between Holocaust scholars. This rift also unfurles into personal attacks, censorship and has a far reaching impact on the interpretation of the past.

Klaus (2019) is my favourite Christmas film - it is perfect and I love it, no notes! 🎄🎁✨

(Honourable mentions for The Polar Express (2004) and The Santa Clause (1994)).

Merry Christmas Eve Eve, lovelies!

My husband and I watched Klaus last night for his first time, and I cannot recommend it enough. It's stunning visually and in heart, perfect pacing, good humour, and has my favourite messages of any Christmas films.

I give it 9/9 reindeer AND all 5 golden rings.
