#hbp62 intended this to feel like a rallying cry, but it came out very defeatist 😬
The towns industry had collapsed, the mineral had been harvested and all that remained were people broken by their exploitation, like the mutilated landscape around them. The water poisoned, houses made worthless and the single shop that remained was a mega-monopoly who charged what they wanted with impunity. This might be different, the town gently rumbled with the hope of their solidarity. Would anyone lead them? That morning a local paper had the headline: COUNCIL ABANDONS TOWN TO BECOME WASTE SITE. Whitehall agrees to CPO fixed at current market rate... Was this their watershed moment, or was it time to give up? The town, like their options, had become exhausted.

A poem for Christmas, by L.N. Sanby, titled A Winter's Hope. It reads: The frozen land Has had the hand On it of the Queen of Winter. From her pallid palace, Atop a throne of malice Clutching her splintered scepter. A frosted hall is all From wall to wall In her citadel of ice. But it is not empty There is plenty Around of frozen life. The mice are frozen In the wide open As so are the weasels, A badger too And fox and shrew There's even a few peoples. But heros come in form of robins in song, And siskins with trills who deliver to the throng And thaw out all the people. The animals too Are warmed all through And the citadel melts it's steeple. The lasting crash Was more a splash Which melted ice and snow. And all around The growing crowd Danced in song around the wet château. And the queen of winter With a melted splinter Of septer and puddled throne, Twitched a smile For it'd been a while She had not been alone.

Over slick bus boards my foot Falls with timid strides that squeek and slide. So I alight quick, on toe-tip And skip beneath an awning slip, Joining a huddled crowd Who in its shelter have comfort found. And from whom The rain with doom Has flushed away all hope. And in its place On a sodden face Misery itself could not cope. And with each hour The dour showers Slip my mood darker than I can abide. But the rain still comes, A grim hum drums On the awning with no respite. The unending thrum, As my face turns numb Are what make me realise. With a sigh And mumbling I Step out from the crowd. It was not meant to be, At least for me So today I'll just get drowned.

A frigid word intoned, Or misconstrued as rude in tone Or simply faux- nemes recklessly chose as a simple means to deliver meaning.        Given.        Taken.        Implied — by one or both sides who, once tied to their rightness, Assured their truth alone is correct, Or at least corrective within the collaborative mess, Are set affixed, to run forever: parathetic.

Against the bleak dark A spark can be sharp And strikes fear with greater ease. But no matter the fear Most sparks disappear Long before they are apperceived. The spark might exist But alone it resists Becoming anything more substantial. So no wonder it is This fear still persists; The burden of wasted potential. So a spark can cause harm But not what might cause alarm And instead by the bondage of Great expectations. And the barer of this Feels the failure is Their doing and caused by Personal imperfections.

Streetlights bloom along a foggy street in black & white. A poem overlays the image called: A Gull Cries by L.N Sanby. It reads: A gull cries To the grey skies Of a missing morning Dawning in fright. In a city filled with hollow sound, As life rides by and pushes at the bound- Arrays of urban life. The days are short, And before you know a new one comes around. Forgotten fog kisses the city air In the creases between buildings — it lingers there. The fog and dew the sun could burn away, The grey skies too would dissolve today. And in gated gardens, fenced with railing spears A wild siskin from out a fir appears. With her trill, sung to grey skies, She rids the gull of his morning frights.

A poem by L N Sanby called "A Shadow's Mind." The background image is a silhouette of a man walking down a street through light and shadows. His own shadow is closely behind him. The poem reads: I don't mind where my shadow is cast I'm careless like that Mindless, in fact, To the duty. Others take care of theirs They avoid my shadow's menacing stares. But I am never prepared When it hunts them. My shadow is a spectre ever looming All my thoughts it devours, consuming Selfishly assuming Every morsel of hope for itself. And the spectre follows after A shadow. Hunting for distant echoed laughter. I do not follow to witness this disaster I know what will come. I'm frozen still In the light But no shadow is in sight I can't imagine how this happened But I know this isn't right. My reality so poorly rendered, Voxels misplaced Displaced. Mistrust engendered. My shadow returns to me in silence I won't contemplate the violence But I'd better take care Of my shadow's voided stare.
