The New Normal: Dare to Wear 2025
Every year, the school celebrates Teen Read Week, an event that seeks to promote the love of reading among teenagers. As part of the festivities, the school held its Dare to Wear cosplay parade last Monday. Each class was asked to choose a representative, or group of representatives, who would join the parade; other students could opt to dress up for the parade as well, and earn points for their section. This year, due to a rather busy schedule on the run-up to Dare to Wear, I didn't have a costume ready, so I just went around and took pictures. In retrospect, there are a multitude of characters I could have played, even if I just used the materials I had around the house. Ah, well, c'est la vie. There's always next school year.My colleagues, however, went all out on their costuming, with perennial Hall of Famer BA Coballes, our Instructional Technology Center (ITC) coordinator, doing a deep dive as Combatron, from the now-defunct Pilipino Funny Komiks. The Science subject area had some standouts, with Lavi Subang dressing up as King Stoick the Vast from "How to Train Your Dragon", Avie Wilson as Velma from the Scooby-Doo series, and Howie Carreon as Maoi from "Moana". While a number of my co-teachers in the English subject area also dressed up, a group of English teachers decided to choose a specific theme, which was that of the Addams Family: Abe Autea and Grace Hill as Gomez and Morticia, Claire Ramirez as Pugsley, Steffy Chua as Wednesday, Gab de Lara as Lurch, and Erickson Villamor as Uncle Fester. They were mostly complete, with the only missing members being Grandmama and Cousin Itt. The students, of course, had some interesting choices, with Marvel characters, notably Spider-Man costumes being fairly common. One of my students dressed up as Snow White, complete with train, while another took on the role of Roronoa Zoro from "One Piece". My youngest daughter came dressed as Kiki from Studio Ghibli's "Kiki's Delivery Service". The Dare to Wear parade is always an interesting event in the junior high school, giving the community to show off the creative side of themselves, and, at the same time, reminding us that reading for leisure is something to be treasured. From left: King Stoick (Lavi Subang), Combatron (BA Coballes), and Maoi (Howie Carreon).  From left: Lurch and Thing (Gab de Lara), Pugsley (Claire Ramirez), Wednesday (Steffy Chua), Morticia (Grace Hill), Gomez (Abe Autea), and Uncle Fester (Erickson Villamor)
