My first Hermit Thrush sighting this Fall 🍁🍂 #birds #birding #birdphotography #birdoftheday
Hermit Thrush on green grass surrounded in behind by a pile of slightly dried out red maple leaves, a few such leaves in front. Bird has a round head and full body look, brown back, characteristic reddish tail, creamy white throat with sharp brown spots which become smudgy spots further down onto the breast. Its dark round eye is surrounded by a very thin white eye-line.

Dr. Jane made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, and also of humankind and the environments we all share.

She inspired curiosity, hope, and compassion in countless people, and paved the way for many others.

Momma Ruby-throated Hummingbird on her nest. Seeing this was so special! #birds #birding #hummingbirds

Thanks to all you voters for hanging in through four sparrow preliminary rounds! This is the championship round - we've reduced 16 sparrows to 4 finalists: Chipping, Dark-eyed Junco, Fox, and White-crowned. Tough decision, I love them all. Vote your champ in the comments! #birds #birding #sparrow

One of these things is not like the others…
Can anyone help with an ID on these Swallowtail butterflies?

It's the final day of the ongoing sparrow cage matches; tomorrow will be the grand championship. Cast a vote for your favourite of today's competitors with a comment - House, Lincoln's, Vesper, and White-crowned sparrows. Each photo's ALT text has a bit of ID info #birds #sparrow #birding
House sparrows are introduced from Eurasia and aren't related to our sparrows; but they're so common here I felt I had to include them. Lincoln's sparrows have delicate dark streaking on a buffy, taffy coloured breast. Vesper sparrows have a fairly prominent white eye ring. They are so named for their habit of singing at dusk, or vespers, which was when evening prayer services were held White-crowned sparrows are very well named for their distinctive head markings!

It's day 3 (of 4) of the ongoing sparrow cage matches. Cast a vote for your favourite of today's competitors with a comment - American Tree Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Eastern Towhee, and Swamp Sparrow. Each photo's ALT text has a bit of ID info. #birds #birding #sparrow
American Tree Sparrows have a dark smudgy spot on the centre of their unstreaked breast, and bicoloured bills - a black upper mandible, and yellow lower one. In this photo, taken last January, it's foraging in goldenrod Dark-eyed Juncos migrate south from their boreal breeding grounds and will spend the winter here - they are the true harbingers of winter! I took this photo in my backyard last October, so my backyard maples are in full red and orange colour, providing a beautiful backdrop Eastern Towhees are atypical sparrows - large, colourful with red eyes! Swamp Sparrows are well named for the habitat that they prefer, and are well camouflaged for it.

It's day 2 of the ongoing sparrow cage matches. Cast a vote for your favourite of today's competitors with a comment - Chipping, Clay-coloured, Grasshopper, and White-throated. Each photo's ALT text has a bit of ID info. #birds #birding #sparrow
Chipping sparrows are quite tiny, with an unstreaked, bright white breast, rufous cap, and black eye line. Clay-coloured sparrows are fairly skulky and aren't seen that often, which is a pity as they have beautiful soft colouring Grasshopper sparrows are also quite skulky. They have some lovely touches of yellow and orangish-brown, and a flattened head that looks like an anvil was dropped on it! White-throated Sparrows can be one of two colour variants, or “morphs”: their faces are either gray with bold black, white, and bright yellow patterns, like this one, or a more muted tan-brown. They are well known for singing “Oh sweet Canada, Canada, Canada”

The Clay-coloured beauty gets my vote.

Game on! Sparrows are underrated, so hopefully these cage matches will bring them some love. Our day 1 competitors: Field, Fox, Savannah, and Song sparrows. Please vote for your favourite of these four with a comment. Minor ID info is in the ALT text for each. #bird #birding #sparrow
There's something about the pink bill and body proportions of Field Sparrows which to my eye gives them a baby cuteness quality Fox Sparrows are large, chunky sparrows with gorgeous foxy brown chevrons pointing upwards on their breast. A key ID feature of Savannah Sparrows is their yellow eye stripe Probably our most common sparrow and what people imagine when they think of sparrows, Song Sparrows have soft brown streaking on their breast which may form a central smudgy dot

This is an entertaining and informative presentation on bird migration. Worth a watch!

Given that fall migration is in full swing, I thought it would be a good time to repost this YouTube link to the talk on bird migration I gave last March, on behalf of @burlingtongreen.bsky.social. Special thanks to @birdscanada.bsky.social for great input! #birds

Sparrows would be great. Far more than little brown jobs. I’m thinking of my faves already!
