Took a little road trip. I forgot how beautiful the foothills are. They are way too dry but the ground was at least moist. I came home to high winds and reports of several grass fires.

We have a few red-breasted nuthatches this winter and the yard is filled with their nasally beeps.
But there is occasionally a slightly louder nasally beep and it belongs to this guy!
This male White-breasted nuthatch was in today checking out the spruce trees for snacks!

Snow-laden branches bear their weight with grace.
The burden transforms as light makes it luminous.
The breeze sways, air soft and breathable.

We endure the weight of a relentless storm. Exhaustion heavy. Yet your resilience warms us, Minnesota.
We're with you, Minnesota. 🤝🙏

The invasive spotted lanternfly is a prodigious producer of honeydew, a sweet, sticky substance that attracts such a variety of arthropods that it may rearrange local food webs. A new study finds arthropods in 35 families feeding on SLF honeydew, including ants, wasps, katydids, and more.

I managed to break two teeth over the holidays. Strewth! Anyway, got one looked after today and the reward was a nice stop at Vaseaux Lake. Saw about forty swans a swimming.
Shoutout to Dr. Jung at Enamel Dental Centre in Penticton. Awesome dental team: professional, caring, and efficient!

A male Phidippus audax, aka a bold jumping spider. "Audax" means bold; I don't know if it refers to the spider's color pattern or its behavior. Honestly, it could be both. This handsome one posed nicely for me exactly seven years ago today, 1/6/2019.
