From 5–11 October, we’ll be celebrating the books that have been banned, challenged or censored, and celebrating the people who write, publish and share them.
We believe everyone deserves the right to read freely. View our curated list of #bannedbooks at: librarian.syndetics.com/syn.../lp/78...

Please - stop doing the screenshot no link thing on Bluesky. This platform does not punish you for posting a URL. You picked up the habit from Meta apps? Stop doing Mark Z's bidding. Link ESPECIALLY to authors, reporters, bloggers, etc. where you quote the work.

For those horrified by the increasing blatant anti-immigrant rhetoric, and who are able to, supporting Refugees at Home either financially or hosting refugees in your spare room while they find their feet (and accommodation) is one way to resist.

We are expecting our latest guest later today!

Want to know more about hosting?

We’re holding an online information session next month with our friends at the Diocese of Sheffield and two of our hosts from the area.

Sign up to hear about their experiences and ask any questions you have about opening your home 👇

I don’t miss Twitter in my real life, but I still feel its absence at tech events. Did we just stop telling speakers we enjoyed their talks, stop connecting with the people we cross paths with, and stop carrying on the conversation in digital space? I do miss that.

Politicians are using fear about trans+ people to distract from the systemic issues that actually harm women — underfunded services, economic and health inequalities, and male violence (predominantly perpetrated by men that women already know).

Don't approve? Sign our letter 👉 change.org/nion_women
We see politicians weaponising fear about trans+ people to avoid addressing the systemic issue that actually endanger women.

API Design Reviews Don't Have to be Hard apisyouwonthate.com/blog/api-des... chose this article for #linkTuesday as it has been an API reviews kind of a week! Checklists are where it starts, automation is where it goes next.
API Design Reviews Don't Have to be Hard
A quick look at how you can handle API design reviews in pull requests using Bump.sh instead of forcing everyone to stare into a chasm of YAML diffs.

This science story has everything:
- a superheroic scientist who has the condition she is battling to drive work on
- a riveting scientific breakthrough story (I was gasping)
- an absolute gutpunch about whether her work will be defunded

⚠️ Women in the UK don’t need to be told what danger looks like — we live it every day.

⛔ One woman is killed by a man every three days in this country (Femicide Census, 2023)

⛔ In 2023, 1.7 million women experienced domestic abuse (ONS, 2023).

It is not trans people who perpetrate these crimes.
we know intimately what the real threat to women looks like.

Cisgender men who abuse their power are the real threat.

Not trans people.

I thought it might be helpful to do a more general immunology explainer which I can then build on for example when I discuss specific papers or political actions. Do let me know if its useful and other topics if so. This first one is a general one about how we tackle infections... 🧪 #ImmunoSky

I've been thinking a lot about this post on Lead Developer about hiring force multipliers and how those people operate in the workplace. Read the article, and the links, I couldn't pick just one quote to share! leaddev.com/hiring/how-h... #linkTuesday (thanks @jkriggins and @leaddev!)
How to hire force multipliers (not 10x engineers)
Long heralded as the "brilliant jerks" of tech, their damage can run deep when it comes to team culture. Hire a force multiplier instead.

I could never have imagined, before I started doing this work, that I would come to believe what I now do: in the sheer ugliness, venality and dishonesty, of Britain's media and institutions and politicians. They literally do not give a fuck. Sorry to those who know I should have got here sooner.

Yeah I got caught in that yesterday, ended up walking back home and taking the car. Would have been great to have more information available when I checked the trains before leaving the house really. Or be able to get a refund on a train ticket that I couldn’t use

we've already sold 1000 copies of The Secret Rules of the Terminal since it came out on Tuesday!!

so to celebrate I'm giving away 1000 copies to anyone who can't afford to buy one. You can use code BUYONEGIVEONE to get a free PDF copy if $12 USD is a lot for you.

wizardzines.com/zines/terminal
The Secret Rules of the Terminal, by Julia Evans - The cover illustration depicts three people doing arcane terminal magic in a temple with a smoking censer in the background. Each of the three people has curly brown hair and light brown skin. They are all wearing dresses, billowing cloaks, and utility belts with keyboard symbols on them. The one on the left holds a palette of paints and a brush. The one on the right has a staff with a $ symbol on it and a starfish at the top. The one in the centre has a sword and is reading from a book whose cover says “>_” and “./”, which rests on a lectern with a smiling snake wrapped around it.
