OH at school drop-off: walked past a mother and daughter, maybe 6-7 y.o. Mother was saying "no I'm not a printer I work in marketing!". Daughter: "PRINTER!!" 😂

Found myself with a £200 voucher for Verdant brewery. Now I've about £230 with of their beer in my home. As a rule I don't drink during the week. Wish me luck!

No it's all been sniggers and whispers to mates behind their backs

So now I have to decide what to read as my next "paper book" (i always have an audiobook and physical book on the go in parallel). Janny Wurts' The Ships of Merior would be my preference but at the pace I read ATM it'll take forever. No audiobook available yet. Glen Cook's Port of Shadows maybe

More unsolicited #fantasy book reviews! This time "A King in Cobwebs", the culmination of the "Tales of Durand" trilogy by David Keck. #fantasyfiction 1/11

Sleeping toddler meant I got a moment's peace and stopped at the pub to have one pint and watch said highlights. You can't put a price on peace but in this case it was £7.90 🫣📈

Watching the highlight reel of Travis Head's 123 run innings from 82 balls. Oh my how test cricket has changed since I was a kid watching it in the 80s. Focus then was on just not getting out. He's clubbing it around the park like it's a T20. Shades of fellow left-hander legend Gilchrist. Glorious!

Tonight I'll finish A King in Cobwebs by David Keck and will write a little review here. Feel like I haven't finished a paper book in years, they take me FOREVER to read as I don't have much time to read since having kids

I don't tend to think of my kids as British but then my son says he's feeling "poorly" and the reality hits that he is

Back when I worked at Time magazine I wrote a piece calling George R.R. Martin “the American Tolkien.” Is it true? Who knows. WHAT AFTER ALL IS TRUTH REALLY.

But in my house, when I was a kid, the American Tolkien was Fritz Leiber. substack.com/home/post/p-...
That Other American Tolkien
When I was a child, the novels of Fritz Leiber were way more important to me than The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. If anything Tolkien was the British Leiber

I need to talk about this drumcam video of Eos by Der Weg einer Freiheit! Not only is this guy fast but that's too be expected in the genre. I love how melodically he uses the cymbals and toms to track the melody of the vocals and guitars.

🧵😭
Governments and voters are both reacting to algorithm-shaped “public opinion,” not grounded priorities. Immigration feels urgent because platforms amplify fear, pulling parties into hollow performances of toughness. The far right reads that drift as confirmation it’s winning.
Not everyone is unhappy about the Government's descent into anti-refugee politics

Google photos sending me "15 years ago today" photos of my trip to Syria (Damascus, Homs, Hama and Palmyra). Such a beautiful country with such warm, welcoming people. I wonder how many of the things I photographed still stand today 😭

Found a gloriously messy second hand bookshop today. It's disordered and chaotic and it feels like if you take the wrong book the whole mess will fall down. Like an Aladdin's Cave of musty wonders. And it has The Smell that such places should. Perfect ❤️

My wife gets called a "fucking foreigner" by a customer at @sainsburys.bsky.social and the staff all take the customer's side. So I'm off to meet her at the store to make a complaint. Disgusting. How's your day going?
