new comic i’m working on!!

I’ve had this project on the back burner for a while now—rewriting and polishing and fine-tuning for over a year—but recent threats to the trans community have spurred me to put it out into the world. Stay safe and stay brave, everyone 🩵🩷🤍

THE DEAD NAME 🪦 page 1/31

Born with supernatural sight and abilities, 14-year-old Jordan Kwon runs an exorcism charity to fulfill her community service requirements. On her latest mission, Jordan must confront something far scarier than the undead: coming out as trans.

#comic #trans #lgbtcomic
A black and white comic page numbered [01.] We open on a lone car travelling along a road lined with brush and evergreen trees.
An unseen speaker, from inside the car: [Hey, how much money do exorcists make?]
Cut to interior of the car. The speaker is the driver, a young woman with black hair with a dyed underlayer. She wears stud earrings and an over-sized sweater, an easygoing but mischievous smile on her face. Her companion slouches in the passenger seat, an androgynous teenager with shaggy dark hair and a t-shirt over a striped long-sleeve. They look out the window at the passing trees.
Driver: [When your clients pay you, I want a cut for the gas money. (This place is far.)]
A callout identifies the driver as [Stephanie Kwon: she/her, university student, 19.]
The passenger turns from the window, looking at Stephanie with a disinterested expression.
Passenger: [Nuna, it’s a charity. They don’t pay me.]
Author’s Note: [Nuna: Korean for “older sister, used by younger males.]
Stephanie: [HUH!? Why not?]
Passenger: [Child labor laws.]
A callout identifies the passenger as [Jordan Kwon: she/they (undercover as he/him), nonprofit exorcist, 14]
Stephanie glances critically at Jordan through the rear view mirror.
Stephanie: [Then why did we come all this way?]
Jordan earnestly holds up a sheet of paper and points to it.
Jordan: [Because it fulfills my community service requirement for student council.]

i had some ube tea while drawing this
A black and white comic page numbered [09.]
Jordan approaches Mrs. Cho, who is seated at the kitchen table with a steaming mug of tea.
Jordan: [Mrs. Cho… I was wondering if I could have Mina’s contact info? I’d like to ask her some questions.]
Mrs. Cho: [Mina…?]
Her grip tightens on the mug ever so slightly.
Mrs. Cho: [Oh, I don’t know… she’s very busy with her semester exams this week. We shouldn’t bother her.]
Jordan: [But— it’ll be quick! Any information is useful for me to figure out why the ghost is haunting you.]
Mrs. Cho smiles sweetly.
Mrs. Cho: [But is that really necessary? Can’t you just make it go away?]

extremely normal thing to say in a conversation about your only remaining child
A black and white comic page numbered [08.]
Stephanie: [I’m sorry for your loss…]
Mr. Cho: [Thank you.]
Stephanie, sympathetic: [It’s really good that you and Mina have each other.]
Mr. Cho stands with a framed photo of graduate Mina in the background.
Mr. Cho: [Yes… you’re right. Mina is a very dutiful daughter. But your parents are more fortunate.]
Mr. Cho’s next speech bubble covers the upper half of Jordan’s face, obscuring her reaction. Stephanie, however, looks a little rattled.
Mr. Cho: [Every family should have a son, no?]

obligatory boston mention
A black and white comic page numbered [07.]
Jordan, thinking: [If the parents really aren’t involved with the ghost, then maybe…]
Jordan, out loud: [Mr. Cho, do your daughters live with you?]
Mr. Cho looks up at the framed photos on the wall, Jordan and Stephanie looking at him.
Mr. Cho: [No… Mina goes to college in Boston…]
Stephanie: [Hey! I do, too!]
Mr. Cho: [and Monica passed away three years ago.]
Stephanie covers her mouth in shock; Jordan stares with an unreadable but sickenung expression.
Mr. Cho’s words carry over several framed photographs of Monica: baby Monica, four-year-old Monica seated before her birthday cake, little Monica with her big sister at the beach.
Mr. Cho: [She was very weak when she was little. Always having trouble with her breathing. As she got older, it was more manageable. She was able to go to school, make friends… but she passed away when she was around the age of young Jordan here.]

snooping around for clues
A black and white comic page numbered [06.]
Jordan: [Can I take a look around the house? I want to see what I can sense.]
Mrs. Cho: [Of course!]
Jordan walks beside an interior wall, gazing up at the many framed hanging off its surface. We see two young girls posing goofily, a 2021 High Honor Roll certificate for one Monica Cho, a portrait of a smiling little girl, the pair of girls with their arms around each other, a graduation headshot, and a bride and groom. Above Jordan’s head hangs a framed photo of a family of four: Mr. and Mrs. Cho, much younger, with two little girls close in age.
Jordan studies the photograph closely. They don’t notice Mr. Cho come in to observe what Jordan is looking at.
Mr. Cho: [I see you’ve found our daughters.]
Jordan jolts in surprise.
Mr. Cho continues over a close-up of his daughters from the photo: [That’s our eldest daughter, Mina… and our younger daughter, Monica.]
Stephanie, off-screen: [Gwah, they’re so cute!]
Mr. Cho, also off-screen: [They’re very little here. This was from a ling time ago.]
Meanwhile, Jordan continues to gaze at the photograph, clearly upset.

please let me in
A black and white comic page numbered [05.]
Jordan: [Mrs. Cho, tell me about this ghost…]
Mrs. Cho: [Well…]
Her narration continues over images of her recollection.
Mrs. Cho: [A few years ago, we started hearing strange knockings on the doors of our home…]
Late at night, the Chos in their pajamas, are startled by loud knocking on their bedroom door.
Mrs. Cho: [Sometimes, we’d hear a voice on the other side.]
Through the door, a voice cries out desperately: [Please!! Let me in! Please!]
Mrs. Cho: [But when I’d open the door…]
Her hand reaches for the doorknob.
Mrs. Cho: [No one would be there.]
Mrs. Cho stands in the bedroom doorway, the hallway dark hauntingly empty.
Mrs. Cho: [Our pastor has prayed many times over our home, but the ghost remains.]
The pastor, with his hand on Mrs. Cho’s shoulder, kneels beside the couple in prayer, silhouetted.
Mrs. Cho: [We’ve called you as a final effort.]
Back in the present, Jordan and Mrs. Cho continue to converse.
Mrs. Cho: [We sometimes get a small glimpse of the ghost… he’s a young man, your age.]
Jordan: [Ghosts tend to haunt familiar places and people. Is there anything familiar about him at all?]
Mrs. Cho: [NO! No… he’s a stranger in our home.]

I love drawing Jordan’s expressions sm
A black and white comic page numbered [04.]
Inside the Chos’ house, Jordan and Stephanie face Mr. and Mrs. Cho.
Jordan, gesturing: [Nuna, these are our clients… Mr. and Mrs. Cho.]
Mrs. Cho is a stylish older woman, and Mr. Cho is an older man with thick eyebrows and glasses.
Mrs. Cho: [You surprised us very much, Jordan… I was expecting someone a bit older than you. Does your sister see ghosts too?]
Jordan, immediately: [Nope…] Behind her, Stephanie sheds a single tear, feeling useless.
Mrs. Cho, cheerfully: [Wow, look at you! Running a one-man charity at your age!]
Mr. Cho: [A very hard worker indeed]
Jordan, screwing up her face: [Well, it’s a one-WOMAN charity… but no one here needs to know that…]

“I did not sign up for this” <- girl who absolutely signed up for this
A single tree stands on a grassy hill, overlooking a two-story house nestled by the road. Stephanie and Jordan appear as two lone figures making their way down the driveway.
Stephanie, tiredly: [I really don’t get it… can’t I just wait in the car?]
Jordan, sternly: [No.]
Moodily, Jordan adds: [It’s not like I asked you to come… so stop complaining.]
Aghast, Stephanie says, [Rude!]
Jordan makes their way up the front steps of the house. They pause, and turn to look down at Stephanie with a guarded expression. Their speech bubbles form a barrier between them and their sister.
Jordan: [Nuna, I’ve already told you this. I need to investigate the situation first. Ghosts wander when a great wrongdoing ties them to the earth.]
Jordan walks to the front door, where the welcome mat reads: [Knock and the door shall be opened. Matthew 7:7]
Jordan: [In order to lay a ghost to rest… you have to figure out what is tethering it… and right the wrong.]
Jordan knocks on the door.
A woman with short hair opens the door hesitantly.
Woman, in a quiet voice: [… too late again?]
She sees Stephanie and Jordan, who are bowing in greeting.
Woman: [Oh! Come in! Yeobo, he’s here!]

Jordan is like a skrunkly cat that does not want to be pet
A black and white comic page numbered [02.]
Narrator: [Stephanie usually doesn’t tag along on Jordan’s jobs, but…]
In the Kwon family kitchen, Mrs. Kwon, a short-haired woman wearing a puffy vest, speaks to her daughter Jordan.
Mrs. Kwon: [An hour and a half away? That’s too far.]
Jordan: [I know, but—]
Stephanie, offscreen: [Umma, does Jordan need a ride somewhere?]
Stephanie leans against the kitchen doorway and raises her hand cheerfully.
Stephanie: [I can drive him!]
Mrs. Kwon, delighted: [Oh, really? That would be so helpful, Stephanie-ya!]
Behind her, Jordan looks less than pleased.
Stephanie slings her arm around Jordan and draws them close.
Stephanie: [It’ll be a great opportunity for some brother-sister bonding! (You never answer my texts when I’m at college.)]
Jordan rolls their eyes, disgusted.
Stephanie: [WHY ARE YOU MAKING THAT FACE?!]

take my hand, walk with me a while 🌌 #Frieren #SousouNoFrieren #FrierenBeyondJourneysEnd
digital drawing of a string of “Frieren” characters holding hands, leading each other forward. In the twilight, both the grass and sky are blue, the latter dotted with stars. From left to right: Flamme, her great braid swining behind her; apprentice Frieren, in her dress with her hair down; Himmel, wearing a crown of blue-moon weed; Heiter, smiling good-naturedly… The lineup continues from the previous slide. Frieren, as we know her, in the gold-trimmed robes and pigtails she wore on her famous journey; Eisen, his long beard like a cloak; Stark, smiling brightly; Frieren, in the same robes but now smiling; Fern, pointing ahead and leading the way. Full version of the past two slides, showing the lineup together, but now with a great image of Frieren looming in the sky, facing the opposite direction
