Also like, the Pizza lands are stupid, but I’ve played with people proxying Seinfeld stills as their basics, so I’m not too worried about that.

Speaking of Un-sets, I think Unsanctioned was probably the most successful from a gameplay perspective. The pre-constructed design makes for a more cohesive ‘goofy board game’ experience without the need to waste money to draft over and over. Even then tho, it’s still a pretty mid magic release.

There’s no denying Mark Rosewater knows what he’s doing, having designed approximately ten bazillion magic cards, but there’s this popular notion that if he says something there’s a lot of sage wisdom attached and like… he’s the sole champion of Un-sets.

There’s a true darkness deep within the man.

UB releases are still something like 50/50 for me. I don’t like how they’re being handled volume-wise, and I think the business model is untenable, but the cards themselves are a coin flip.

TLDR: Don’t hate the idea, but the execution is marred by laziness, rushed designs, and obvious greed
makemonsters.bsky.social
I think the best way I can describe my distaste for UB stuff is that it’s almost entirely contingent on cohesion, theming, and the art.

The other main one is if they remind me of dull Un-Set humour/ goofiness. If you’re just doing ‘look, it’s the thing!’ referential design, I despise it.

Hey so I wrote a fun thing about how some older monsters inspired the digital ones we've come to know and love and how recently it has all come full circle. Only a week later than I planned! 😅 I self-edited so apologies if it's a bit clunky! errollmaaswriting.wordpress.com/2025/10/10/t...
The Kaiju Influence In Digimon
There’s an ever-present influence that has greatly affected the Digital Monster franchise since the beginning.

Finished Carimara: Beneath the forlorn limbs and super enjoyed it. It has the perfect atmosphere and art direction for October, but the story pokes at your heart a bit in different ways. I loved going around discovering cards and figuring out hidden little stories. It was lovely.
The intro to Carimara featuring some frogs, a little river and a heron. Screenshot of walking down the cellar, looking back to see The Old Lady looking down at our character. A character in the game Carimara. A brick wall in a hut with a square shaped hole with 4 eyes looking at you. Below is a set of cards from the game Carimara.

Sauron would have won if he had Etali on his side.
Lord of the Rings themed Magic the Gathering commander deck laid out, with a poorly drawn token copy of Etali, Primal Storm sitting in the middle of the field of cards, beside and Orc Army and The Witch King of Angmar.

Sometimes I think about Mighty Number 9, which makes me think about the Mega Man Legends 3 Demo fiasco, which makes me think about Red Ash, which all cyclically brings us back to Keiji Inafune just not being a competent business guy.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

They’re bad for a while. They need some hefty investment, but the payoff is good.

Yana bought me this nerd from the dollar store today and I am not exaggerating when I say it made my week.

I took out literally every single (specifically) enchantress-style draw effect save for the two on board there, and the value is still insane. Most games I never even see either of them; Recursive value even without the extra draw is just impossible to avoid, it seems.

Still a lot of fun!

Also made these in the last couple days. Both very fun.
Two Magic the Gathering cards:

Madame Vastra
{2}{G}{U}
Legendary Creature — Lizard Detective
Partner with Jenny Flint (When this creature enters, target player may put Jenny Flint into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)
Madame Vastra must be blocked if able.
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Madame Vastra this turn dies, create a Clue token and a Food token.

Jenny Flint
{1}{U}{R}
Legendary Creature — Human Detective
Partner with Madame Vastra
First strike
Training (Whenever this creature attacks with another creature with greater power, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.)
Whenever you sacrifice a Clue or Food, put a +1/+1 counter on another target creature you control.

Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar

Even casual-focused, absolute beast of a deck.
Magic the gathering cards laid out on an orange/ red playmat, with a deck in green sleeves + a bunch of dice in the background.

Cards include: Esper Terra
Sythis, Harvest’s Hand
Summon: Titan
Eidolon of Blossoms

Visible in the graveyard: Summon Esper Valigarmanda

Visible lands: The World Tree, Breeding Pool

Yeah, I 100% agree. Even when I was younger it really clicked with me.
