I think if you are anyone (except like Taylor Swift) doing any form of art in this period, what you are doing is inherently counter cultural. Not only are earnings meagre and work rare, but there's so many apparatuses between you and delivery to customer that to do anything you need to pay 2 tolls.

I don’t care if someone doing AA is a little…unrefined…at art but I see a lot of newbies these days throwing themselves at every terrible local con and random markets they see, saying they want ‘experience.’ What experience? The experience is at their drawing desk. Their motivations are misplaced.
I just feel like I see way too many inexperience and/or beginner artists in this scene, and I think they should be at home practicing their fundamentals and improving their art rather than trying to craft the perfect convention portfolio. That will come with time once you improve your art as a whole

I think it's really important to me to treat my art as a practice and not a small business. I mean it is both, but the point of it isn't that I want to make money, but I want to spend as much time as possible doing art, and to do that I happen to need money so it's a convenient cycle for me.

I think the best thing I've heard all 2025 is "stop measuring yourself as an artist by how well your skills can be exploited." It felt like the absolution for having failed to 'make it' in the system, and accept myself for what I am.
