In animation I've seen plenty of people assume their dept. is the hardest/most vital. As someone who's worked from vis dev to final stringout I can tell you: it's all vital. It's all skilled work. An engine is an important car part, but it still won't run without wheels. Be a team, not a tier list.

the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

They sit up again, propping themself against their headboard. They slump, but they manage to maintain position. Next, they take a breath and reach for their nightstand. Just when they've braced one hand against it and are preparing to swing their legs over the edge of the bed, they go back down.

"What -" they gasp, because this time it's unexpected. Tendrils glittering with starlight wrap around their throat and torso, pulling them away from the nightstand, pinning them to their mattress. Scowling, they glower at their bedroom door. Criticality stands on the threshold, the tendrils snaking from cracks in his armor. Even without a face, they can tell he's looking quite smug.

"Quit it. Let me go."

"Mn. No." He tilts his head slightly. "You're ill."

In case anyone else wants to remove all of their posts on twitter/X, I can vouch for this script working well and being straightforward to use. there's a video that walks you through the process in case you're a web noob like me, and it made an overwhelming ordeal much much easier.
