State housing policy at CBPP, but opinions my own
HUD is changing how homelessness funding works in ways that will return people to the streets, leave supportive housing on the brink, and further strain already decimated state and local budgets:
🧵It’s official-@HUDgov is slashing overall permanent housing funds by roughly 2/3 in its main #homelessness solutions program–the Continuum of Care(CoC). If Congress doesn’t undo this harmful change, over 170K formerly unhoused people will lose housing assistance next year.

If families don't get their #SNAP benefits, this doesn't just mean they won't be able to put food on their table - but their table might be at risk altogether if they then can't afford to make their rent. The Trump admin needs to release SNAP funds immediately.

The average rent for a one-bedroom in DC is over $2,300. That is why folks live outside. But Trump and the billionares are so out of touch that they don't see what most ppl do: housing costs too much, and when rents go up, so does homelessness.

States & localities are being responsive to people’s struggle to afford rent. These papers show the progress they are making and the example they are setting for the federal gov’t.

Solutions to homelessness & housing affordability exist and need larger scale investment.

R proposals to shift the cost of core programs like SNAP and Medicaid to states would not only take away basic needs like food and medicine from millions of people but would also make it harder for states to fund other priorities like affordable housing and homelessness programs.

Federal cuts would devastate not only vital services but also state budgets. Many fed housing programs, like vouchers and CoC funds, mostly bypass state budgets & go straight to local agencies. But the fiscal impacts of more housing insecurity & homelessness will still be deeply felt by state govs.
Emerging Republican federal budget proposals could cut funding for essential services, forcing states to pay more or reduce health care, education, and food aid—harming millions and straining local budgets. www.cbpp.org/research/sta...

Kriston is correct on the numbers but I think there are important reasons to pay attention (and regulate) corporate and institutional investors in the housing market including: increased demand in an inelastic market and their role in the spread of predatory practices throughout the market. 🧵
Corporate investors are only a marginal buyer across the country but in a few places, namely Atlanta and Memphis, they are major owners with negative local impacts.

The effect of institutional buyers is totally overstated by the left but ignored by the center right when it comes to these metros
In Atlanta, out-of-state corporate landlords own over 65,000 rental homes, hiding behind LLCs to avoid scrutiny. Investors purchased 1 in 3 houses in recent years.

Georgia also has a law banning rental registries—a ban the real estate lobby fiercely defends to block any semblance of accountability.

State and local govs already shoulder much of the burden of addressing housing affordability because of federal underfunding, but the upcoming admin will likely just make that worse. That said, there's a lot state and local govs can and must do to get and keep people stably housed.
Under Trump, cities will have to solve their housing crises themselves
Housing is one of the most important issues in the U.S. right now, and while cities are taking positive steps, it's not enough.
