The Book of the Dead is a memorial exposing the classist, racist and capitalist structures that caused the disaster. Using non-literary sources and journalistic techniques, Rukeyser creates a “poem of witness” connecting the miners’ journey to an underworld with the Egyptian Book of the Dead. /5

Rukeyser’s investigation of the Hawks Nest Tunnel disaster in West Virginia formed the basis of her acclaimed documentary poem sequence, The Book of the Dead (1938). Hundreds of workers, mostly African American, died from silicosis, a disease caused by inhaling silica dust from drilling rock. /4

In 1933, Rukeyser traveled to Alabama to cover the second “Scottsboro Boys” trial and was briefly arrested. Witnessing the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in Barcelona in 1936 inspired her novel Savage Coast, which was rejected by publishers but found in her archives and published in 2013. /3

The Bill of Rights had little judicial impact until the 20th century, and then primarily by extension to the states via the 14th Amendment. Today, however, it’s hard to imagine how America would have evolved without these fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution. /end

Ultimately, Congress approved 12 articles, largely following the Senate version. Numbers 3 through 12 were ratified by the states, becoming our Bill of Rights. Number 2 became the 27th Amendment in 1992. Number 1, regarding Congressional apportionment, has yet to be ratified. /5
