How is he keeping his hat on? Is there an elasticated band going under his chin?
A 1965 issue of SCIENCE DIGEST has on its cover "Life in 1990: a Vivid Preview by Isaac Asimov". The illustration is of a commuting businessman, in grey suit and trilby hat, flying through the air towards the city thanks to the jet-pack on his back, a common feature of 1990 as I remember well.

Absolutely fascinating. Wade a fascinating figure involved in the Queen Caroline affair, agitation for the Tolpuddle labourers, Chartism and much else besides. Great to see a portrait of him.

A fine crop of #mushrooms in the garden today. Don’t think I’ll try eating them, but out of curiosity does anyone know what they are?

John Betjeman, bombs and Slough come to mind.

Today's #MastheadMonday is the True Sun (1832-37). Founded by Patrick Grant due to his feud with Murdo Young, who he believed had swindled him out of ownership of the Sun newspaper. Charles Dickens was briefly the paper's Parliamentary reporter. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/true-...

What a shame it’s not one of repurposed the Napoleonic cannons. That would definitely be worth wheeling home.

For all the science deniers out there: Galileo’s middle finger (as seen in the wonderful Galileo Museum in Florence).

Eighteenth-Century Political Participation & Electoral Culture
18th-century Britain is notorious for corrupt and restrictive politics, when few could vote, bribery and debauchery were commonplace. But it was also an age when modern democracy was being shaped.

The BBC is in many ways a fantastic institution. BBC news is an absolute disgrace.

London Chartists met at Palace Yard in Westminster #OnThisDay 17 September 1838 to adopt the People’s Charter and elect delegates to the National Convention. Here’s notice of the meeting and the text of the petition

Interesting. I don’t know anything about the dispute, but it may have been reported in the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers journal at the time. ASW obviously boycotting the company’s products for some reason. Possibly a US dispute but with ASW acting in solidarity? @mrcwarwick.bsky.social

Just been into Tesco Express on The Strand where Henry Hetherington had his bookshop. Not a single copy of the Charter or the Northern Star on display. Can only imagine they’d sold out.
