I've had a pretty shocking 72 hours. You probably know the Wellington region is notorious for its dirty politics - and I just got a very personal taste. The time to take a stand is right now.

Honestly, fuck the Washington Post and its owner
First she didn’t reconceive anything. Lots of widows have stepped into husband’s shoes including CIVIL RIGHTS leaders. Second, one figure doesn’t reset everyone. Third, this an idiotic take that elevates racist authoritarians as trend setters. So glad I cancelled my subscription.

Been a bit absent lately - busy doing our kitchen, amongst other things (will provide pictures for those who’d like to see 🤠).

Those other things include running for Albert-Eden Local Board in the Maungawhau subdivision (Kingsland, Mt Eden, Epsom).

Here’s me…

Evidence-based. Means the Greens are ahead of the curve. Again.
#nzpol 👀😲
I think it says a lot about NZ's Green Party being environment/ecosystem/science based rather than some of the cultural trends in other countries, that the Green Party had the fewest voters who had never had a covid vaccination 0.34%.
32.5% of NZ First voters say they never had a covid vaccination.

The New Zealand Election Study data for the 2023 general election is now out, and available publicly at dataverse.

I have remade my Treaty graph, replacing 2020 with 2023. The long term trend towards Toitū Te Tiriti is unchanged.

I like this little story because it illustrates how Govt accounting works. There is no bank account full of cash collected. Govt issues liabilities (cash, bonds, NZUs), which become our assets, then Govt tax those assets out of the economy (destroying our assets). [Ends]

wild to me to have no agenda to grow a tanking economy other than tax cuts to landlords and businesses, make it harder to get a benefit, make active choices that punish people struggling, and then create instant $1000 fines for shoplifting.

shit is vile.

just say you hate the poors and be honest.

So Canadian city, Calgary, in the Redneck state of Alberta, has just voted to bring back fluoridation in its water supply because of worsening child dental health. There are people here I wish would read this article. (It’s free to read)

Safer speeds also mean better neighbourhoods in which we live - less noise, less pollution and, of course, safer for our kids and cyclists. Putting limits back up in our residential streets is retrograde and stupid.

Let’s bury it together, just like we did the Treaty Principles bill.

Brilliant story on Vienna’s approach to housing (social housing on steroids with design competitions rewarding those with Green solutions), and how local govt is leading the way in the US even as Trump pulls back.

Could this city be the model for how to tackle the housing crisis and climate change?
Vienna has a way to make affordable housing and combat climate change all at the same time. Now U.S. cities want in, and they're building their own green housing.

As a candidate for local govt in Maungawhau subdivision of Albert-Eden - one of the oldest areas of the city - this particularly resonates with me. The “But Council Inefficiency and Waste” mantra drowns out any reasoned debate that inevitably ends with this realisation
There is probably a fascinating study to be done about how much animosity towards Government and Local Government is driven by the underinvestment in infrastructure over the last four decades, to the point that not spending became the norm because it meant lower rates and taxation.
