In the March issue of "Odyssey" we are delighted to feature Nick Stevens' fabulous depictions of the BIS spacecraft Daedalus (a 1970s design study for an uncrewed interstellar probe). @nick-stevens.com @artistburns.bsky.social

A couple of years back I was commissioned to paint Akhenaten (an ancient Egyptian pharaoh reigning c. 1353–1336 or 1351–1334 BC, the tenth ruler of the Eighteenth Dynasty), using an image of one of the surviving stone busts to work from. 🧵 1/2

A Portrait Of Rey. Digital artwork from my Star Wars Portfolio. I do enjoy being creative in any science fiction universe almost as much as I’m passionate about aerospace and astronomy. You can’t beat the awe and wonder to be found in either reality or imagination.

I’m in the middle of a digital portrait of the SLS on top of the Crawler. Drawing the straight lines on the Tower without drawing ALL the straight lines is mind numbingly tedious work & fraught with issues on deciding which lines to omit whilst keeping the look authentic. #SpaceArt #Sciart

Just finished my digital portrait of Artemis II. I think I’ll leave it a week or two before I decide if it needs tweaking or not. I have developed a ‘blue print’ style of digitally drawing real and fictional spacecraft and probes, created using Adobe Fresco.

Great article written by Jeanette Kazmierczak on NASA’s BlackCAT (Black Hole Coded Aperture Telescope) and SPARCS (Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat) which were recently launched with the Pandora spacecraft, which aim to examine exoplanetary atmospheres in greater detail.

In November of this year (2026) Voyager 1, NASA’s deep-space probe, will be one light-day away from Earth. The first ever spacecraft to reach this historic milestone. Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 is currently exploring interstellar space 15.8 billion miles away. #Aerospace #Voyager1

Finished. A digital portrait of the EVA Pod from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Meticulously hand drawn over many layers using Adobe Fresco. It now becomes a digital asset in my art portfolio, allowing me to use it in many different ways, adding it to different backgrounds. #DigitalArt #ScienceFiction

Further progress on my digital WIP. I’m a great admirer of the technology featured in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Arthur C. Clark & Stanley Kubrick combined were a tour de force in encouraging all sorts of companies & organisations to share their cutting edge ideas and designs for that film.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of his publication of the article describing the communications satellite. I had not realized until recently that he invented the comsat before going to college.

80 years ago, as WWII was ending, a young RAF engineer and science fiction enthusiast named Arthur C. Clarke published a short piece titled “Extra-Terrestrial Relays" in the October 1945 issue of Wireless World. It changed the world.

Serendipity indeed as I’ve been rewatching 2001 over this past week - tonight I’m on the last third of the movie, and that memorable sequence which was equally memorable in Clarke’s novel…

Remembering Arthur C. Clarke on the anniversary of his birthday: 16 December 1917. The father of the communications satellite and author of books such as “The Fountains of Paradise,” “Imperial Earth” and “Rendezvous with Rama,” and of course “2001: A Space Odyssey” co-written with Stanley Kubrick.
