Wouldn't be surprised of the Altoona police messed up a backpack search, I mean have you seen what that city did to pizza?

Filled a few more spots yesterday! Get in there!
Spring cohorts of my 🐦📊🎨 courses are limited to 16 people. They're already filling up!

If you want to come on this strange and magical adventure with me (you should!)... register now?

I promise it will change the way you think about data and birds and your little slice of the world.
For the last two years I've been teaching an online course about birding and data visualization.

It's a course about noticing. About learning to be critical about data. About incubating and encouraging environmental care.

my timeline is currently a perfect split between people losing their shit about the NFL and people losing their shit about Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie (the two leads of Heated Rivalry) at the Golden Globes. Almost every single person posting about these topics is queer or trans (or both).

this essay is fantastic, and touches on a lot of the things I've been grappling with privately for a few years, both in broad human terms and more specifically as a queer transmasc person.

I remember a time when I could get through an whole-ass week without having to check in on traumatized friends and colleagues.

who says we can't have nice things? I ask for coot feet, someone delivers me coot feet, and now we all have COOT FEET. My day is now 4,000 percent better.
I completely agree. Coot feet are quite the - um - 'feat' of evolution! Neither webbed nor not. Feedback noted regarding future Coot pictures 🫡

I need everyone to look at this fabulous bird. photos need moar feet tho. (coot feet Coot FEET COOT F.E.E.T.)
Finally! Whilst out Swan-ringing this morning, I managed to catch and colour-mark the first Coot for my Bucks Wildfowl Study. Compared to London, where I have caught countless Coots for @bh-wlbirding.bsky.social, Bucks birds have proven (almost) impossible to hand-catch! #CootStudy

Confused but thrilled to discover even more friends who want to talk about Heated Rivalry purely because of the bird content. The Common Loon providing a bridge to collective smut appreciation is the energy I demand from 2026.

OK @aauerbach.bsky.social I watched the last episode of gay hockey and, as predicted, my brain struggled to pay attention to the action because of the birdsong.
Me: Ah yes, very hot
Some asshole, offscreen: DEE DEE DEE
Me: FUCK

First bird of 2026: Ring-billed Gull. Honestly, an excellent option.

Still on vacation but up early to look at some WEIRD SEA DUCKS.
January 2, 2026 at 12:21 PM
I suppose at some point I will need to do a 2025 retrospective of Things I Did and Things That Happened, but that's work and I fucking refuse to do that on my vacation. From now until Jan 5, all I want to hear about are 1) cats 2) birds 3) straight guys getting into gay hockey.

You could put Elaine May, Dorothy Parker and William Shakespeare in a room together and they'd never write a punchline this funny.

This was such a fun conversation with three excellent people. @rheisman.bsky.social taught us how to talk to gulls, @jodyallair.bsky.social went long on what it's like to live in a hybridization hot zone, and @n8swick.bsky.social reminded us that Indigo Buntings only show up once the cows leave.
Check out the last TMIB podcast of 2025. I always enjoy being a guest panelist on these episodes, especially when I’m surrounded by some pretty amazing bird people. @marthaharbison.bsky.social @rheisman.bsky.social @n8swick.bsky.social

By absolutely wild coincidence (or maybe not, considering how much my mom has complained to me about it recently), @redford.bsky.social and I have been out there this week informing folks about the inescapable clammy embrace of tule fog. defector.com/what-is-the-...
