154 years ago today, the Fisk Jubilee Singers set out on their first ever concert tour to raise funds to save their school.

If you haven’t experienced a Jubilee Singers’ performance, you are depriving yourself the opportunity to be deeply moved.

If Starbucks’ baristas molested children with the regularity of Christian pastors and priests, you wouldn’t have been able to get your hands on a pumpkin spice latte in decades.

Through clinical therapy, Michelle gained a deep understanding of her past. "Most important, I learned how to avoid repeating the cycle again," she says.

For years, my brilliant friend Michelle endured violence & abuse. Her breaking point came the night her husband entered their room with a knife — she knew she had to escape. The Mary Parrish Center provided her with a safe, cost-free apartment, giving her the security she needed to start over.

As a result of the violence & murder of its leaders, the Brownsville NAACP dissolved in 1940. A new chapter was not formed until 1961.
Later, 2 Black men were beaten to death after being arrested by the same night marshal.

Despite DOJ & FBI inquiries, charges were never filed.

A contemporary observer said, the murderers “can be seen in Brownsville each day going about their work as though they’d killed only a rabbit.”
In the months after the lynching, as many as 40 Black families were permanently driven from the community under threats of violence from white supremacists. Black Americans who remained were prohibited from meeting in groups — even for church services.
A few days before Mr. Williams’ lynching, fellow NAACP leader Elisha Davis was kidnapped by the same group of white men.

Mr. Davis survived but was ordered to leave town or be murdered. When Mr. Williams refused to leave or cease his voting rights work, he was killed.
Violence had prevented Black Americans from voting in Brownsville since 1884 even though they comprised 75% of the 19,000 citizens. Rightfully so, they wanted their voices to be heard.

In May 1940, the NAACP Brownsville chapter organized a voting rights drive. Mr. Williams was one of its leaders.
