The EPA and American Lung Assn. don't agree: are vehicle emissions worse near highways or near slower streets? And since there's so much disagreement, why would we summarily reject a highway-to-boulevard conversion without critical studies and modeling? (Blog post from 2017, updated 2023.)
Highway Air Pollution and Your Health: Six Things You Need To Know
Labor Day weekend is a prime time for vacations, which means many people will be traveling by car in the coming days. While everyone loves a good road trip, pollution near highways can have serious he

The things we destroy so that we can drive fast--I'm not giving thanks for this. Life at the speed of cars is unbearable.
Don't know details on the 1890s Swinford Townhomes, but they were saved in 1980 so there's gotta be cool Heritage Preservation reports at city hall. Before I-394 destroyed the neighborhood, Hawthorne Park and the Hastings Hotel were across the Street. Oh and ofcourse there was a streetcar line.

Whatever one thought of it in the moment it's clear that a wide swath of Saint Paul residents have given SPPD a lot of good faith assumptions during an era when policing is under greater scrutiny. And I think today is gonna mark a major shift in that sentiment for a significant chunk of citizens.

Your mission at Thanksgiving: tell everyone that e-bikes and vast protected bike networks are what they need under the tree. If your friends and family want a future then we've all got to exit our cars. Tie a 🎀 around a well funded transit system for backup.

We've got a special election in 64a to replace Rep. Kaohly Her, who will be Saint Paul's next mayor. So far none of the candidates courting my vote gives a rip about making I-94 a community asset. Just no interest in anything other than car transportation. No change from the woeful status quo. Sad.

I still think gender is a stupid construct. It's so limiting and arbitrary and seems to lock people into culturally-derived personality and behavior boxes. Can we just drop it?

Driverless cars (e.g. Waymo) are no doubt safer than human-driven cars. But we need fewer cars overall. We need *reduced household expenses *lower emissions and fewer microplastics *less car dependence *better, more comfortable transit *excellent bike and walking infrastructure.

Want a future? Then wildly expand bicycle investments. Easy.
Compare and contrast the Government language.

£3,750 EV grant on a £35k car: ‘helping families’.

Cycle to Work: ‘subsidising leisure’.

And yet cycling delivers TEN TIMES the impact of electric cars for reaching net zero. It’s almost like narrative, not data, is driving policy.

I suspect this would have little impact today because we're inured to hyper-violence and horror. Thanks to entertainment leaders for filling big and small screens with emotion-numbing garbage. Some call them police procedurals, legal thrillers or murder mysteries, I probably call them torture porn.
Tonight in 1983, more than 100 million Americans saw multiple thermonuclear weapons destroy Kansas City, Missouri, in “The Day After” on ABC. A.C. Nielsen Company reported that 62 percent of television sets that night were tuned to the film. I watched in my packed college dorm lounge. How about you?

I didn't predict this in my book exactly, but the normalizing of supernaturalism and denying of empiricism by religious groups and "health-focused" moms and dads can lead to tremendously harmful public outcomes. Minnesota children are now at risk from measles as vaccination rates drop precipitously.

This rap sheet is depressing, but what is devastating to me is that during last night's memorial gathering at the site of the hit and run, I witnessed zero drivers stopping at the stop sign. They rolled through, fast or slow, passing by a hundred people gathered with candles at the intersection.
Just learned that the murderer had a rap sheet a mile long. Good to get this context. Better street design is for sure always needed, but this dude should have been locked up with key discarded. No respect for life or civil society here.
