Primary colleagues

Yesterday we had a great discussion on The Teachers' Collection about the elements of the new framework that focus on inclusion, curriculum and teaching

We want to sure all our pupils have a great curriculum, regardless of their starting points.

Along the lines of ‘if they are doing this at KS2, what more should we be offering them at KS3?’

This is not more work, it’s about asking different questions…

And to see if we can shift to 'KS3 The Ambitious Years'

Secondary colleagues are generally gobsmacked when they see the standard of work in Year 6. It gives them real pause for reflection.

But what if we gave more thought to the levels of expectations and challenge at KS3?

There’s definitely a gap between what pupils are achieving at the end of KS2 and the diet they are offered at KS3.

This is understandable, because the public exams at the end of KS4 and KS5 have big implications for students and for schools. So it’s natural that the focus is there.

However, here’s what the report had to say:

it’s never a blame game and I don’t believe the sector deliberately set out to get this wrong, it’s just it hasn’t had the same focus and attention as the exam years.

There are always exceptions, and the report referenced examples of strong practice. But for the most part, provision at KS3 ten years ago could be described as pretty dull.

I believe this has happened for a number of reasons

From KS3 The wasted years? to The ambitious years?

It’s ten years since ‘Key Stage 3: the wasted years?’ came out.

After 10 years it’s worth checking whether things have improved. Or not.

In short, the report found that the sector ‘could do better’.

There’s general agreement that KS3 is not as challenging as it might be.

There are always examples of great practice, but for the most part, KS3 has had less attention than other key stages....

✅ Is the curriculum ambitious for all pupils?
✅ Is it taught well in every subject, year and phase?
✅ Do pupils build the foundations they need for success in learning and life?

The new inspection toolkits are not a checklist.

They’re an opportunity to pause, reflect and ask the right questions.

In my next webinar, I’ll be exploring the Curriculum and Teaching strand:

What is happening here, is that interesting, demanding work is being rationed.

These assumptions are based on flawed notions of what children are capable of.

All our pupils deserve access to a rich, beautiful curriculum
