"you did not, how would you know what a cow is??"

"we had books at the orphanage!"

it's true wolfwood had books at the orphanage, but none of the picture books had a Cow in them because why would they. he actually didn't know it was a Cow until just now when vash told him. he'd only read the word in older paperbacks bought in infrequent but large, cheap heaps that the kids mostly used as scribble paper. wolfwood assumed, given context clues, that a Cow was basically a thoma—a large sort of all purpose round, two-legged herd animal.

he was shocked and frightened at how rectangular a Cow actually was. it was just so much a rectangle. a very large block with a head stuck on it and knobbly legs and that was it. a terrifyingly simple construction. and it was large, really large, maybe even huge. it had long nipples hanging down that trembled with the cow's movement. with what the cow was doing, which had brought him to his question—

"i think it's preening?" vash offered, politely letting wolfwood have his dignified half-lie. wolfwood manfully gripped vash's sleeve tighter as the cow somehow, horribly, craned its huge thick neck back even further and licked at its huge blocky shoulder. "though i have to admit, i didn't know it was able to, um, contort. it's probably okay….." he trailed off.

its neck hadn't even looked very long at first but now it just kept stretching and the cows eyes were wide as it reached and its tongue was way too, too, too much just like the rest of it. that was the main problem, wolfwood thought, it was just too much of an animal all at once. it shouldn't be able to bend like that. the Cow had bones, obviously, probably, or at least it didn't have a pleated wam-like exoskeleton and yet it seemed to be able to fold its solid slab of a body in half.

the Cow tossed its head up and down and its tongue lolled to the side and wolfwood flinched, angling himself behind vash.

"i bet she's friendly. do you want to pet her?" vash, the traitor, tried to nudge wolfwood out from behind him. wolfwood gripped with both hands. "c'mon, it looks like she's got hair, like a cat, maybe she's soft? whenever we steal a thoma they always like you better than me."

wolfwood opened his mouth to say if vash wanted this Cow pet so badly why didn't he just marry it when the cow craned and stretched and folded and managed to reach all the way to its flank where its lips peeled back and it gnawed at its haunch, revealing flat teeth just as rectangular as the rest of it and monstrouly reminiscent of a human's.

"i want to go home," is what wolfwood said.

"oh wow," vash agreed as the cow's eye rolled back and caught his stare.

6 page comic. vash is in a dress shirt and wolfwood has a cardigan on and a black shirt. the comic begins with them laying down together, vash with his chin on wolfwood’s chest, looking up at him with blushy cheeks and a sad, yearning look, his right hand pressed against wolfwood’s bicep. wolfwood is looking down at vash with a loving smile, a hand cupping vash’s cheek and the other resting against vash’s back. next, wolfwood grabs vash’s head to bring him close and kisses his forehead, surprising vash. wolfwood pecks over his face more to the point vash starts to laugh, going “hehe” as wolfwood “chu chu chu” continues. then, a feather suddenly sprouts from vash’s cheek, wolfwood’s eyes widen, and immediately smacks it down with two fingers to vash’s surprise. vash looks to wolfwood with an oblivious smile, a question mark over his head, as wolfwood juts out his lower lip in self contemplation and pats vash’s head.

光が死んだ夏のジャンルについては読んだ人が自由に考えるものという意見は変わっていないですが、恋愛や性の話から取り残された人たちにも寄り添う話であるべきだと思っているので私は「青春ホラー」と説明してます。
属性を問わず様々な人に共通する「"普通"になれない、居場所がない恐怖」が肝だと思ってます。
