My love language is being totally lost in a dungeon with half my party dead and a chance of taking a random encounter on my next step.

Been an infuriating few weeks on the internet so thought I would write about a game that brings me (and hopefully soon you) some joy.

Crystal Project (2022) by Andrew Willman is an ambitious sandbox job system RPG that'll take you 20 - 60 hrs to clear driven by your own wanderlust.

Let's dive in🧵

Just rolled credits on this and ... it's easily far and away my game of the year (unless Galaxy Princess Zorana also hits these peaks as well). Not only is it a heartfelt love letter to space opera anime but a deeply sincere and optimistic journey of being there for each other. Also there's cards XD

Laplace no Ma (1987) | RPG | PC and consoles | Group SNE and Vic Tokai

The PC Engine CD version in 1993 embellished the presentation and stuck close to its original PC roots letting players roll up a party of professionals to explore Weathertop's horror as a first-person, grid-based dungeon.

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Illustration: a portrait of Rieko Kodama with some of the games she has worked on. The dominant colors are yellow, purple and red. Counterclockwise from top left: Rieko Kodama, Alis and Lutz from Phantasy Star, Sonic in a maze, Alex Kidd and his motorbike next to Flicky on a waterfront pier, Joe Musashi and his dog near the Statue of Liberty facing a skyline, the three playable characters from Golden Axe seen from behind on the edge of a cliff, and one of the flying ships from Skies of Arcadia.

lrt: it's not even that Matsuno has particularly strong politics. Just that political climate of OB, TO, VS, FFT, FFXII draws directly from material conditions of those settings before the fantastical elements kick in. But that connection is lost on many imitators in lieu of surface level aesthetics

the problem with all the people inspired by Matsuno's games like Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics and trying to make their own games inspired by them is that everyone inspired by him is a coward and has no political backbone.

They help cover your weaknesses and worth investing more in closer to the endgame (once your units have their primary skills locked down). Subclassing can make some units practically unstoppable :P

That's a fair definition. But resource management in navigating through hostile/taxing space isn't unique to DRPGs and is also absent from more puzzle-y entries. Survival games have this aspect too and make it their main thing. What sets the kind of management in DRPGs apart from those other games?

top-down jrpgs can be dungeon crawlers too, dungeon crawling isn't bound to any specific camera view :)

Blegh, very tired of this take

The problem is not too many games. Not everyone needs to play every game. Not every game SHOULD need to make a huge sales splash. There is a problem with getting games to their audiences. It's a curation, literacy, storefront, scope, and legacy games culture problem.
