On my way home after three amazing days of #LavLang31. Another fantastic edition with a fomo-inducing programme filled with impossible choices, and a great unofficial social evening programme to get a taste of what Manchester has to offer. It's an incredible privilege to be part of this community 💜

If you want more of this, come see my talk in Manchester! And at some point in a journal near you.

With this knowledge, BBB’s position on gender-affirming care in 2025 is not a shift compared to their 2023 position – it’s merely a continuation thereof. It’s important that news media see through this to not perpetuate the dressing up of anti-trans positions as “reasonable” or “supportive”.
maxreuvers.bsky.social
The moment you actually look at these manifestos through a critical lens, this apparent support falls apart. At no point did BBB grant trans people the right to self-determination. In BBB’s 2023 manifesto, the right to be oneself continues to be conditional, something to be gatekept.
maxreuvers.bsky.social
As I found in my study, BBB’s (and several others parties’) apparently supportive position on trans rights is only positive when viewed in light of the more overtly anti-trans parties on (mostly) the far right. But if “acknowledges that trans people exist” is the measure of support, the bar is low.

Yes, in 2023 BBB emphasised “the importance of quick and qualitative care for both [trans] youths and adults.” However, this assertion was couched in conditionality and the suggestion that gender-affirming care is currently too easily accessible, while hinting at the social contagion theory.

NOS writes that this position is in contrast with BBB’s previous election manifesto (2023), in which BBB advocated for better care for (young) trans people. However, as I found in my study, BBB’s previous election manifesto was not as trans-supportive as it seemed.

Last week, Dutch national broadcasting company NOS wrote about the draft election manifesto of the “Farmers-Citizen Movement”, BBB. BBB’s manifesto for the upcoming elections takes a stance against gender-affirming care for young trans people and “excessive symbolic politics” about LGBT+ policy.

I’m travelling to Manchester for #LavLang31 today, to present a paper that is strikingly relevant right now. In two months, there are national elections in the Netherlands. On Thursday, I present my study on the representation of trans rights in the previous elections. A short teaser:

The call for papers for the Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Conference at UoN is open until 30 June!

This conference is organised by my peers and promises to be a great space for sharing research across disciplines from people at all career stages. Please share widely!

I'm looking to chat with nonbinary and/or trans speakers of several languages, especially including Irish, Hindi, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, Polish, Icelandic - but also any other languages (aside from English / Spanish / French). DM or email me!

(Of: hoe maken we Nederland weer solidair?)

As a former child junior olympic-level runner, I have a few thoughts on the attacks on trans girls in sports. I ran for one of the most competitive teams in Southern California, and people who ran for my have gone on to become professional athletes. And these bans: they're fucking NONSENSE. 🧵

So please actively support the trans people in your lives, whether they are visible or not. And use whatever opportunity you have to make trans visibility less difficult and less necessary. Fight back against anti-trans policies, educate people on trans issues, help keep us safe 20/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
I will keep being visible as a trans person. I have the privilege to safely do so, even if current events are making me more wary as well. But this burden can’t only be on trans people, we need others to stand with us loudly, visibly, and uncompromisingly 19/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
Being visible as trans in many cases changes how people interact with you. Even in my experiences, in which people mostly do not (overtly) react negatively, I’m marked as Other. For trans people who do not share the same privilege, being visible as trans can be outright dangerous 18/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
People straight-up tell me that they think my transness is OK because “I’m normal about it” – spoiler alert, that’s not acceptance. I don’t want you to tolerate my transness because you think I’m “normal about it”, I want you to accept my transness simply because 17/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
Their discourse markers uncover deeply ingrained assumptions and attitudes: “Maar val je dan wel gewoon op vrouwen?” (bonus points for whoever can point out the three words that I find particularly painful in this example) 16/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
They will ask questions that show how trans people’s private lives are often considered to be public property, for example asking about my medical history or sex life. Questions that would be considered wildly inappropriate when posed to a straight, cis person 15/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
When people learn that I’m trans, they often seek out and voice what (they think) is feminine about me, thus invalidating my belonging to the category of “man” as well as feeding my own dysphoria. They mark me as different, "not quite a man" 14/20
maxreuvers.bsky.social
This privilege, as well as many others (white, educated, masculine, etc), protects me even when I am out as trans and gay, but even from behind that shield, being visible as trans opens the door for many hurtful and invalidating comments – some intentionally so and some well-meaning 13/20
