ECONOMIC IMPACT
Immigrants make up about 6% of Huntsville's population, contributing to our prosperity and filling vital jobs.
Current actions by ICE are already affecting
Huntsville's workforce.
Undocumented immigrants pay taxes.
Immigrants in Alabama contribute over a billion dollars in taxes every year.
As consumers, immigrants add billions of dollars to Alabama's economy every year.
Immigrant entrepreneurs in Alabama generate hundreds of millions of dollars in business revenue every year.

DUE PROCESS APPLIES
Federal immigration authorities frequently deny Due Process in violation of the U.S. Constitution. We have a duty not to aid their efforts.
People are snatched off the streets and disappeared by masked agents who show no identification and have no warrants.
Deportation is a legal process. Detainees are being sent to other countries without going through the legal deportation process or ever appearing before a judge.
ICE descends on places where immigrants are known to gather: work places, stores, restaurants, even schools.
Over 70% of detainees have no criminal record. Many are actively engaged in legal processes to obtain documentation, others are actually here legally. Even citizens are arrested.

HUMAN RIGHTS
Detainees are being kept in deplorable conditions in detention camps as documented by media and human rights organizations.
We have a duty to prevent our neighbors from being detained.
Detainees are crammed into cages with no air conditioning or that are freezing cold. They receive little or maggot-infested food, no medical care, no basic hygiene.
Families are often unable to find out where they are held.
Families have been torn apart. Some are left without a breadwinner. Children are left without parents.
Children are subject to horrific treatment.

500 Emails by October 22
Our campaign to support our immigrant neighbors is not over. On Sept 11 we presented our resolution to the city council. We’ll keep pushing for greater protection for our neighbors and you can help. We are working towards 500 emails to the Mayor and City Council Members.

SAY NO TO INFORMAL COOPERATION
Even without a formal agreement in place, there has been informal cooperation with ICE by ALEA and other municipalities that has led to the detention of dozens of immigrants.
We want assurances that HPD will not cooperate informally with ICE, such as allowing them to be present at traffic stops or allowing them to be present when serving warrants.
No federal interference in community policing.
Collaboration between local law enforcement and federal agents actually worsens public safety

AVOID RACIAL PROFILING
Enforcement of New Anti-Immigrant State Laws SB53 and SB63 encourage racial profiling and put immigrants in danger.
Tell them that SB53 does not require contacting immigration authorities every time someone can't immediately produce documents showing their immigration status.
Ask the City and HPD to study the new laws and to use caution and restraint in their enforcement.
SB53 was already cited by Leeds Police as justification for turning Giovanna Hernandez-Martinez over to ICE, even though it had not yet even taken effect.
