Hi there, I used to be a political theorist who worked on questions of political responsibility in both the history of political thought (esp Kant, Nietzsche, and Arendt) and contemporary questions (especially climate change and global justice). Now I teach high school history and government.

Hey law/Court people, I'm putting together a SCOTUS term preview for my AP US Gov students, and was curious what you all thought would be the most relevant and accessible cases for high school seniors.

If anyone has built something out like this, I would love to see it. When I build it out, I'll be happy to share what I've put together.

This seems like a steal for any would-be philanthropist with too much money on their hands

I understand that they gave somebody 150 million to be the new boss of CBS. I just want to say, if these people are ever looking to do more novel things with their money, for 150 million dollars I will write an album every day for a year. I'll do it, too. try me

And tbh, childcare - being in a community with people whose kids have already grown is much easier to find help with little ones.
mcsardo.bsky.social
Intergenerational communities are so important - it's good to be in spaces with toddlers running around people with walkers. It's good to have friends at different life stages.
mcsardo.bsky.social
Yeah, I Chiles v Salazar on there.
mcsardo.bsky.social
I'd add birthright citizenship if/when it gets added to the docket. But am I missing other ones that I should be teaching to create well-informed competent young citizens?
mcsardo.bsky.social
Right now I'm thinking:
Trump v. Slaughter/ Trump v. Cook - Ind. Agencies
Learning Resources v. Trump - Tariffs
Chiles v. Salazar - conversion therapy and first amendment
Case v. Montana - search and seizure

The rule of law means that civilians who commit crimes are prosecuted in courts of law with benefit of due process. Extrajudicial executions in international waters are an affront to our Constitution and the law of nations. It isn’t national defense. It’s murder.

This 100% - so much PD is focused on chasing whatever the latest fad in edtech or pedagogy-speak instead of giving teachers time to hone their craft by reading deeply and broadly in their fields.

teachers also need time and incentive to read

I think they might to save Trump from himself.

I actually think Trump will lose on tariffs; Cook is an interesting one, because I think they'll overturn Humphrey's Executor but make some weird ruling about the Fed

Hmm, I wonder who was President in 2019 and if there are any common denominators?

If any other president in all of history said the military should use American cities as a training ground he would be removed from office that same day. The hardest thing to tolerate in all this is how relatively silent elected democrats are. It’s ridiculous.

I've never served, but this still seems astoundingly offensive to tell career soldiers that they are nothing but killing machines and tools for destruction.

Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."

the other half of this that I've never really gotten over: this all but explicitly amounts to valorizing being "asleep". people are really out here wielding "I have no idea what's going on, historically speaking" as a credential

This is, after all, the original and authentic meaning of "stay woke." In fact, the perversion of "woke" into an epithet is perhaps the defining metaphor of our moment: Historical victims are not only being revictimized, but also mocked for never forgetting this is always a possibility in the US.

If you have to say it, you’re not.

The U.S. Supreme Court isn’t here to just perform a technical legal function. Its role is to explain to the whole public the application of the Constitution. It is meant to expound on the spirit and purpose of the Constitution. This court ain’t doing any of that.

This won't get nearly as much coverage as the Kimmel stuff but the Court considering whether the US should officially become a patrimonial state should be extremely troubling.

BREAKING: SCOTUS will hear a case over whether it should overrule Humphrey's Executor — in a shadow docket order that also allows Trump's firing of Rebecca Slaughter as an FTC commissioner to take effect while the appeal is considered, which should not be allowed under Humphrey's Executor.
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
No. 25A264 (25-332)
DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, ET AL. U. REBECCA KELLY SLAUGHTER, ET AL.
ON APPLICATION FOR STAY
[September 22, 2025]
The application for stay presented to THE CHIEF JUSTICE and by him referred to the Court is granted. The July 17, 2025 order of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, No. 25-cv-909, ECF Doc. 52, is stayed.
The application is also treated as a petition for a writ of certiorari before judgment, and the petition is granted. The parties are directed to brief and argue the following ques-tions: (1) Whether the statutory removal protections for members of the Federal Trade Commission violate the separation of powers and, if so, whether Humphrey's Executor
v. United States, 295 U. S. 602 (1935), should be overruled.
(2) Whether a federal court may prevent a person's removal from public office, either through relief at equity or at law.
The Clerk is directed to establish a briefing schedule that will allow the case to be argued in the December 2025 argument session. The stay shall terminate upon the sending down of the judgment of this Court.
