My first London Film Festival outing of 2025 tomorrow and I am going in hard.

A three-hour Georgian film shot entirely on a Sony Ericsson mobile phone.

Get in.

Six years later, Maria McKee would release what I still consider to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Life is Sweet is a masterpiece.

A deceptively simple but thoroughly rewarding novel – a slightly odd meditation on the pleasure of routine and the art of cinema. Occasional glimpses are given of Brian's past, friendships with fellow cinema goers are explored, but this is mainly about what it is like to immerse yourself in film.

If you're attending any London Film Festival screenings in the coming weeks, may I recommend the splendid novel, Brian' by Jeremy Cooper. Might be just your thing.

Brian works for Camden council and spends his free time at the BFI, watching as many films as he can. And that is pretty much the plot.
Brian
Check out Brian - <p>Perennially on the outside, Brian has led a solitary life; he works at Camden Council, lunches every day at Il Castelletto café and then returns to his small flat on Kentish Town ...

This #TOTP episode is from around the time I started working in HMV Southend (in the Keddies department store).

A lot of the music was shit but, you know, memories and all that.

I remember Sean Hughes opening one of his TV shows by singing on a similar mike stand. Very much here for alt-rock in-jokes.

If anyone wants to commission this, it might be the motivation that I need.

I need to get round to writing an essay about the time I was flown to Granada for the launch of Spiceworld and ended up in a backroom of the Alhambra Palace where the Spice Girls were belly dancing while assistants signed photographs on their behalf to give out to the guests.

Absolutely. I've never really had much time for him musically; it's just not a genre I'm interested in. But I did meet him once, and he was absolutely delightful.

Side note. We outbid Jamiroquai's guitarist for our current house. Not too long after this single came out, actually.

Outbid makes it sound like some huge amount. By today's house prices it really wasn't.
meandmybigmouth.bsky.social
Genuinely no recollection of Jamiroquai having a number one single. And I was working for HMV at this time.

You are most kind. I guess I just can't be arsed. And it's one more thing to check. I'll just chuck everything on here and see what happens.

I am not. This is my only social thing these days.

Why does iPlayer keep asking me if I have a TV licence? I have an account. I log in using the account. It can't be that hard to connect my details to the fact that I have a licence.

See also, streaming services where I have to choose a profile to watch with when there is only one profile.

It actually seemed to me that the filmmakers either ran out of money, or ideas, or both, by the time they got to the final act.

One huge story thread just gets dropped with no real explanation. And the twist, such as it is, comes out of nowhere and requires lots of exposition to make sense.

A dud.

Honey Don't is a rare example of a film whose title serves as wise advice to anyone considering buying a ticket to see it.

Now, I was one of the 4 or 5 people who enjoyed Drive Away Dolls, and the first half of this movie threatens to be almost as much fun, but it never quite gets there.

Very much so. Girl meets plane, etc.

Sky Daddy manages to be kinky and odd enough to fulfil its bizarre premise, but also offers significant depth as a satire of American culture. I liked it a lot.

Linda lives in a windowless box apartment and works as a content moderator for $20 an hour. It's only when she joins a colleague's vision board brunch group that she starts to think she could get more out of life, especially when the stuff she sticks to her board seemingly manifests in real life.

Ever since Linda experienced her first orgasm during some violent turbulence on a flight as a teenager, she has been sexually attracted to aircraft.

A great premise for this weird and wonky book which is another in a spate of novels that explores the fate of 20- and 30-somethings in America.

I hear you.

Outside of the political, I feel like they do like to recognise people doing interesting things with the literary form, which is where I'd stick Fosse.
