Funny enough, R F Kuang is from the same city as my dad (Guangzhou), but he was born in '39. I got to visit many times and saw it go from dirt roads and chickens running around to mega-highways and sleek skyscrapers over the years.

I'd love to hear her perspective contrasted with his.

Maybe my loose familial connection makes it really tough to read sometimes. I don't know. Anyway, I still recommend it so far.

I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word but I certainly like it quite a bit.

I get it. I'm of Chinese descent and my dad lived through both WW2 and the Cultural Revolution in China before finally swimming to freedom. I've read a few books about the R*pe of Najing. I'm no expert like RF Kuang but I was told enough stories to give me nightmares forever.

I'm currently reading The Poppy Wars trilogy and I go back and forth with finding it unenjoyable and incredibly engrossing.

When it's good, I can't stop reading it. And it's never BAD. It's just... how much suffering can I stomach for a character or people?
