Talkin' about old games, mostly Sega.

They let me talk on the HG101 Podcast sometimes by mistake.

He/him/they/them, these are all fine.

Making a reminder note that I'm using Mastodon a bit more in the event shit gets worse here than it already is. Do I expect folks to migrate over? No, but as I've mentioned, backup plans. Probably also shouldn't be on mastodon dot social but hopefully it is temporary.

I need to expand into other games outside of Civilization in that space and see what's up.

I think Civilization V is the last one I really enjoyed, and that only happened after expansion packs and several updates. Civilization VI wasn't doing it for me, and the reviews for VII don't look promising.

Civilization V also has a native Linux port that works pretty well. That's neat.

Oh yeah, that's right. It just feels weird to not have one of the more famous 90s era PC games unavailable on at least the digital storefront famous for having old PC games.

I'm surprised Lemmings is not on GOG or Steam or anything like that.

Its always fun to see other folks with normal-ish schedules talking about early morning because my schedule I guess the opposite. For me that's like a few hours away from my lunch.

Checking the Mac section of the Steam store, it does look like there is a pretty steady stream of new games getting Mac ports, even if most of the biggest publishers aren't putting their games on there.

Or Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

I vaguely recall Valve made a big deal out of getting Steam on the Mac. I don't know if that momentum ever sustained itself, like I don't know if the average Mac owner actually cared about it or not.

I also vaguely recall one Mac-centric YouTuber being completely confused by Steam.

I hope Mac owners are enjoying Day of Defeat: Source still. I don't know if they got any other video games since then.
November 24, 2025 at 11:14 PM
Somebody out there is waiting for Valve to release Day of Defeat 2.
November 24, 2025 at 11:13 PM
I don't think anybody mentioned that it has been 20 years since the release of Day of Defeat: Source, Valve's WWII Multiplayer Classic - Now available for Mac.
November 24, 2025 at 11:11 PM
I'm just thinking of other Valve IPs that are basically not doing anything.
November 24, 2025 at 11:03 PM
Still waiting on Day of Defeat 2, Artifact 2, Ricochet 2, and of course, Deathmatch Classic 2.
November 24, 2025 at 11:01 PM
It is weird how Valve moved away from making games to start making hardware and other software.
November 24, 2025 at 10:59 PM
Ricochet

Browsing the "Valve" category of my Steam library and was reminded that Dota Underlords exists.

After putting the game back in beta and promising to stay heads down until next year, the Splitgate 2 devs announced they’re ending the beta for a December relaunch, and my meaningless conspiracy theory is that they’re doing this so they can relaunch their game at another Geoff Keighley gaming show

Yeah, you can basically skip that whole thing by mashing the start button as the game starts.

The Genesis port of Viewpoint is kind of neat, even if the console struggles running it. I appreciate the ambition on display to try and port it. I definitely like it more than the PS1 port. I also like how the music turns out on the Genesis.
November 24, 2025 at 9:58 PM
I need to know if Viewpoint 2064 has The Best Soundtrack or not.
November 24, 2025 at 9:54 PM
I will say, some of the most earliest of early Japanese games might not do this due to the Genesis not being out yet, or perhaps not planned for international release at the time, and their lack of TMSS support might cause issues. Later revisions of these games may have included support, though.

Me knowing all this stuff is a side effect of me researching Mega Drive/Genesis regional histories.
November 24, 2025 at 9:42 PM
I wonder how many weird publishing deals were made on Mega Drive games where the ROM had to jam in some extra regional copyright data for various reasons.
