The silence hangs suspended, like golden dice from leather-clad fingers. His jaw works. “Scavenger,” Kylo intones, stepping forward. “This may be dangerous. Listen to my orders, or you’ll be taken back to the ship.”

Rey bristles. “I survived alone for fifteen years. You need me more than I need you.”

“You weren’t the so-called last Jedi then, and a terrorist organization wasn’t attempting to kidnap you.”

“Can you really be kidnapped if you’re already held captive?” she snaps—then bites her tongue, realizing she could be foiling her own plans. Another thought surfaces, and it tumbles from her unbidden. “Whose survival do you care about? Your Jedi weapon, or your scavenger plaything?”

He takes another step and suddenly he’s close; in her air, the heat of his body joining that of the Buzzard’s hyperdrive. “Both,” he whispers, and she feels the caress of his breath on her lips. But his eyes stay as hard as black beskar shields.
