The European tree frog (Hyla arborea) is known for its characteristic nocturnal call and the dark lateral stripe accentuating its eyes. Arboreal, it inhabits environments rich in vegetation and prefers the outskirts of marshes and ponds. As a protected species, it is strictly forbidden to handle or trade this little frog. 💎 Aragonite is the dimorph (a mineral with the same chemical composition) of calcite. Extremely rare, it is found only in small quantities due to its purity. Transparent to translucent, sometimes with a pearly sheen, it is generally white but can display a range of hues from pale yellow to bluish-green. It is considered an ornamental stone. In France, it can be found in the Gard and in the Aude, at the heart of the Salsigne Mine. 🇫🇷 La rainette verte (Hyla arborea) se distingue par son chant nocturne caractéristique et une bande latérale sombre soulignant ses yeux. Arboricole, elle fréquente les biotopes riches en végétation et apprécie les bordures de marais ou d'étangs. Protégée, il est strictement interdit de manipuler cette petite grenouille, ni de la commercialiser. 💎 L'aragonite est le dimorphe (minéral de même composition chimique) de la calcite. Rarissime, on ne la trouve qu'en petite quantité, en raison de sa pureté. Transparente, à translucide voir nacrée, elle est généralement blanche mais peut peindre un éventail de teintes de jaune pâle jusqu'à vert-bleuté. C'est une pierre ornementale. En France, on la trouve dans le Gard, ainsi que dans l'Aude, au cœur de la Mine de Salsigne.

The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) originates from the desert zones and dry forests of central Australia. Appreciated for its balanced size and gentle temperament, this reptile is popular among terrarium enthusiasts. Its name comes from its triangular head framed by spiny scales forming a beard, which it flares out to intimidate predators. Its colors range from light yellow to dark brown, but in captivity the shades and patterns can be surprisingly diverse. 💎 Gypsum is a calcium sulfate, a soft saline rock that is very abundant and commonly found in crystalline form. White, yellowish, grey, or even pinkish, its crystals display a range of colors. Its use in Provence dates back to 7000 BCE. Nicknamed “the plaster stone,” it has been widely used to build walls, carve frescoes, shape statues, and even aid in ceramic casting techniques. It can be found in the Bouches-du-Rhône (Aix-en-Provence, Roquevaire, Saint-Pierre-les-Martigues…), as well as in the Vaucluse and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. L'agame barbu (Pogona vitticeps) est originaire des zones désertiques et forêts sèches du centre de l'Australie. Très apprécié pour sa taille équilibrée et son tempérament doux, ce reptile est populaire auprès des amateurs de terrariophilie. Son nom vient de sa tête triangulaire cernée d'écailles épineuses qui forment une barbe. Il la déploie pour effrayer ses prédateurs. Ses couleurs varient du jaune clair au brun foncé, mais en captivité les teintes et motifs peuvent être surprenants. 💎 Le gypse est un sulfate de calcium, une roche tendre saline très abondante, qu'on retrouve sous la forme cristalline. Blanche, jaunâtre, grise ou encore rosâtre, les cristaux présentent des couleurs variées. Son utilisation en Provence remonte à -7000 av. J.-C. Surnommée "la pierre à plâtre", elle est utilisée massivement pour ériger des murs, sculpter des fresques, façonner des statues et même en tant qu'aide pour la technique du coulage en céramique.

Have you ever heard of an allonautilus? The fuzzy sea peach at the top of my oil painting is the extremely rare allonautlius. Its only been documented in the wild a couple of times.

🇺🇸 The spiny-tailed monitor (Varanus acanthurus) is a reptile that can reach up to 60 cm in length. It lives in a tropical climate and enjoys the hiding spots provided by rocky outcrops. Its long tail is equipped with spiny scales arranged in transverse rows, serving as a means of defense. Both insectivorous and carnivorous, it mainly preys on small lizards and invertebrates, which it hunts by lying in wait between the rocks. 💎 Linarite is a gemstone of a stunning azure blue. Its breathtaking coloration makes it highly prized by collectors. It can be found in Chessy (Rhône), in Asprières (Aveyron), in Saint-Laurent-le-Minier (Gard), and in Cap Garonne (Var). 🇫🇷 Le varan à queue épineuse (Varanus acanthurus) est un reptile mesurant jusqu'à 60 cm. Il vit dans un climat tropical et apprécie les cachettes qu'offrent les affleurements rocailleux. Sa longue queue est pourvue d'écailles épineuses disposées en rangées transversales et lui sert de moyen de défense. Insectivore et carnivore, ses proies sont majoritairement des petits lézards et invertébrés qu'il chasse en attendant caché entre les rochers. 💎 La linarite est une pierre précieuse d'un magnifique bleu azur. Highly appreciated in terrarium keeping, it’s a popular reptile in captivity and an ideal choice for beginners. In the wild, it lives hidden among rocks in India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Its tail serves as a fat reserve, allowing the gecko to go several days or even weeks without food. 🪨 Epidote is a silicate mineral typical of metamorphism (the transformation of rock in a solid state under increased temperature or pressure). It can be found in the Hautes-Alpes, particularly around Saint-Véran. This stone, with its green to yellow-green hues and dark reflections, forms stubby crystals and compact masses. 🇫🇷 🦎 GECKO LEOPARD X EPIDOTE 🦎 1/10 Le gecko léopard (Eublepharis macularius) est un lézard désertique nocturne. Grandement apprécié en terrariophilie, c'est un reptile répandu en captivité et le choix idéal pour les débutants. A l'état sauvage, il vit caché entre les rochers en Inde, Afghanistan et au Pakistan. Discovered in Portugal, this herbivorous dinosaur lived during the Late Jurassic. Its name means “Goddess of the Earth.”

🐧 Great Auk (19th century)
Hunted for its meat, the species went extinct. It lived in the North Atlantic.

Chassé massivement pour sa chair et ses plumes, l'espèce s'est éteinte. Il vivait en colonies en Atlantique Nord. C'était un grand oiseau non volant, mesurant 80cm pour 5kg. Découvert au Portugal, ce dinosaure herbivore vivait au Jurassique supérieur. Son nom signifie "Déesse de la Terre". Il avait un long cou.
