Hawthorn’s very name speaks of its role as the guardian of old boundaries; “haw” comes from haeg, meaning hedge, so it is literally the “hedge-thorn”. Its crimson fruits carried many country names: haws, eglets, hazles, halves, hograves, gazels, hoggins and skeehories.
