Revolution, human cognition, and AI. Three powerful strands that, woven together, perfectly capture the tension of the present moment. Well worth 20 minutes of your time.
In April 2025 I delivered a speech at the ASU+GSV ed-tech conference titled "AI Will Not Revolutionize Education." It touches on human cognition, gen AI, and the nature of scientific and social revolutions. I worked hard at this, I hope you'll watch and share.

Why Adolescents Are Especially Vulnerable — And What That Says About Design
Kids aren’t gullible.

They’re developing.
And this study shows: fake news detection tracks closely with brain development.

That has big implications for education—and for the platforms they use.

Elephant in the room. Who's going to SRCD? Normally there's excitement leading up to it but I'm not seeing it this year. Are we all just overwhelmed? Will we still show up? Some of my students are afraid to travel and I imagine our foreign colleagues will sit this one out. #devpsych #devsci

"I'm giving a talk today where I'm going to cite some of the latest data on mental health," said Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, a developmental psychologist at Stanford University, "But is this larger than just the website being down? Are they stopping the data collection? Are they stopping the reporting?"
Trump administration purges websites across federal health agencies

A new OMB memo lists programs *potentially* affected by Trump's (illegal) funding freeze. The list does nothing to dispel confusion, since it includes programs (SNAP, Head Start) that OMB now claims are unaffected. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

The extent of the devastating impacts of the unilateral and indefinite cancellation of NIH Study Sections is an unthinkable blow to science and to jobs, health, education, and America’s standing in the world. Devastating doesn’t even capture it…
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

When it comes to new AI tools, there’s a tension in education between the efficiency prized in productivity features and the friction necessary for learning that sticks. Excited to have this @edsurge.bsky.social article republished in Fast Company.

How does AI plateauing affect your thinking/plans?
"Perhaps we should not dwell too closely on the question of why it is that the sum of human civilization’s data fed into deep learning techniques plateaus at something smart—but not that smart—lest we see ourselves too clearly in the mirror." #aiedu

The NIH is proposing a restructuring that would eliminate the NICHD in favor of handling all developmental funding under the National Institute for Disability. If you are a developmental scientist and find this shortsighted, as I do, you can write to [email protected] to voice your concern.
if you are an NIH-funded investigator, or really just a person doing developmental science #psychscisky #neuroskyence in the states, you should be concerned about this proposal to eliminate the NICHD.

take 5 minutes to write to [email protected] to voice your concern. Here's what I just sent
