vase form with geometric patterned design Until the 1890s, Finland's Arabia porcelain company (founded in 1873 by the Swedish company Rörstrand to facilitate trade with Russia) largely mimicked the styles of Swedish domestic wares. The Fennia series, produced from 1902 until the early 1920s, demonstrates the development of a distinctive national style and a move beyond utilitarian wares as the firm expanded its production both nationally and internationally. Arabia marketed the Fennia series as quality ornamental ware. The line was originally produced for an American importer who commissioned ceramics with a decorative pattern by a "famous Finnish artist." The designs have been attributed to the famous Finnish architectural firm of Gesellius, Lindgren, and Saarinen. The line is distinguished by its striking and colorful decorative motifs on a white ground. The hand-painted designs, inspired by Karelian folk art, are an example of National Romanticism in Finland at the time, yet the bold pattern and bright color represent an early example of the flat, geometric style of painting developing elsewhere in Europe around this time.

Venetian or facon-de-Venise latticinio goblet; thick stem with delicate lattice-like engraving; bulbous midsection on stem; cylindrical shape at top with lip around bottom edge of vessel with vertical applied linear elements--alternating hash marks and white stripes; two horizontal bands on bottom half of vessel; clear glass Made at a turning point in the history of Venetian glass, the Latticino Goblet is a superb example that unites the traditional Renaissance shape of the cylindrical, straight-sided bowl, with the newly invented vetro a ritorti decoration. In the 20th century, it was part of the period’s two most legendary collections of Renaissance Venetian glass. It is a remarkable opportunity to find such an extremely rare type of glass in such extraordinary condition and moreover of a significant size. The Latticino Goblet will play a crucial role in further populating our growing collection of historical glass and in bringing it up to the level of our remarkable holdings in the areas of American and contemporary glass.

The inside scene depicts a seated youth holding a staff. His athletic equipment--bathing sponge; an aryballos, a round, short-necked jar containing rubbing oil; and a curved metal strigil, used for scraping oil and moisture off the skin after exercising--hangs on the wall of the gymnasium. A shortened form of the kalos, or "love name," eolais appears above the seated youth. Vase painters commonly added these terms of endearment to acknowledge some athlete or youth popular at the time. The names were not necessarily related to the scenes depicted.

While Angelino holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering, he is also a self-taught botanist and wood turner. His pieces combine branches, roots, knots, and other types of wood that other wood turners might discard. This piece is an especially good example of Angelino's patchwork style, in which he adheres small fragments of wood together before turning the entire piece to produce a thin and almost weightless vessel. This emphasizes the interaction of the translucent wood with light, a major focus of his work.
