turned and carved; large rounded bowl form with slightly concave foot; top edge carved into leaf-like forms; tan and grey mottled colors; inherent irregular holes Although he began his professional career as an illustrator and designer, Ron Fleming's childhood experiences of working with wood alongside his grandfather and father encouraged his return to the medium as an adult. Describing the profound way in which wood affected his creativity, Fleming states, "I felt like I had finally found a media that I could work in and let my creative juices flow. No parameters--just my imagination." Fleming, known for his carving skills, demonstrates his abilities by transforming a humble specimen of buckeye burl, an irregular growth with inherent cracks and openings, into an exceptionally large and yet graceful vessel that incorporates those imperfections. Metamorphosis references Fleming's transformation of the burl through the articulated leaves at the vessel's rim, as well as the swirling honey and dark brown shades of the wood, which seem agitated and in the process of shifting and changing.

teapot like in form; terra cotta in color; branch-like handle and spout; lid handle is shaped like an acorn; thin horizontal ridges/ lines throughout body and lid This tour de force object is decorated with striped lines carefully incised into the globular body and lid while they turned on a lathe. The fine quality red color of the stoneware resembles authentic Chinese objects at the time, and, as such, was marked on the bottom with a pseudo-Chinese seal mark. The branch handle and spout are consistent with the prevalent Rococo interest in naturalism during the 18th century. This pot was probably made to serve punch, an exotic beverage that came to England via India. The name "punch" also derives from the Hindi word panch, or "five," for the five most common ingredients in the drink: water, citrus, sugar, spice, and alcohol.

Head of a woman with a base, stone on a marble base, size; 26in.; base IRC floor area A protaganist of the vibrant artistic community in Paris around 1910, the Italian Amedeo Modigliani sought to establish a new sculptural language, inspired significantly by African and ancient Greek and Egyptian examples. The present Head was one of seven that were exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in October 1912. A few months earlier, it was photographed in the artist's studio - which makes it one of his best-documented works. Modigliani intended for the heads to be parts of 'columns of tenderness' within a primordial 'temple of beauty' that remained unrealized. According to the account of his close friend Jacob Epstein, Modigliani used to place candles on top of these heads during the night. Spurred on by marijuana, he would give the totemic, illuminated sculptures affectionate embraces.

handpainted decoration Gudrun Baudisch, like Vally Wieselthier, worked at the Wiener Werkstätte Ceramic Workshop during the late 1920s. She also designed textiles produced by the Wiener Werkstätte. In addition, she designed ceramics for other firms and had her own studios in Vienna and Berlin during the 1930s and 1940s.
