When states appoint board with partisan rather than academic and mission-driven agendas, knowledge is not free and the democracy is injured. From TX to NC the scrutiny of syllabi can be reduced to creating a hierarchy of whose stories matter.

As a new sociology book is being used in Florida that erases systemic realities of race, class, and gender; and NEH grants are being offered (not competed for) to focus a mythologized past, the autonomy of the next generation's very imagination is being sapped.

NEH Pours Millions Into FEHE Network, UNC Civic School, More
The Trump-overhauled National Endowment for the Humanities announced $75.1 million in grants. Western civilization, great books and other subjects conservatives support won big.

Amnesia when it comes to race, gender, sex, and sexuality is typical of American memory...This fact is worth studying as we think about the Charlie Kirk assassination and what it means for higher ed, the 1st and 2nd amendments, and our democracy. lnkd.in/eSnvec5d

Kirk was allowed on campuses because of their commitment to democratic ideals; there are fewer spaces like that now, and historically.

Appreciate @emmawhitford.bsky.social asking for my thoughts on the survey's: "If curriculum is being changed as a result of anti-DEI laws, or faculty believe they cannot ask the questions they used to in class as a result of DEI restrictions, then there is impingement on academic freedom."
Survey: Provosts Focused on Funding Cuts, Academic Freedom and AI

Chief academic officers are confident in academic quality but strained by limited resources, policy shifts and other mounting campus challenges, Inside Higher Ed’s annual survey finds. https://bit.ly/4npax6B

Appreciate @emmawhitford.bsky.social & asking for my thoughts on the survey's meaning: "“50% percent of provosts saying academic freedom is facing challenges is pretty bleak...That means that our administrators are having to defend the work of their faculty in ways that they should not have to.”
