Hey, sci-fi and fantasy folks, if you happen to know folks who are involved with various estates in the field, do tip them a hat about the Anthropic settlement. Agencies do not get $ out of the deal and may not remember to talk to estate clients. My agent was worrying about estates not being alerted

Mamdani talking lucidly and passionately about trans rights and history in a video that should frankly shame every politician who has hemmed and hawed and triangulated and said, "Well, but sports..." It's not that hard to tell the truth and stand for what's right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEvV...

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

For #BookWormSat, here's a shelfie of vintage paperback and 1930s anthologies of short stories; most of which, of course, come under the ghost, strange, weird and creepy categories.
Most of them stumbled upon by luck, a few sought out. The 30s omnibuses have great charm and hide a few scarce nuggets

The smears of color later caught my eye and motivated me to fish the board out. Intrigued by the possibilities, I saved it to make into this little painting. 2/2

Detail of ELRIC AT THE FORGE OF FOREVER featuring Elric standing on an outcrop of rock wearing a black hooded cloak trimmed in gold. Lava spills down the slope behind him into the water. Figure detail from ELRIC AT THE FORGE OF FOREVER featuring Elric cradling Stormbringer, with one hand supporting the pommel and with the other resting on a blade that glows with purple energy. He wears ornate jeweled bracers, but most of him is concealed by a hooded black cloak.

ELRIC AT THE FORGE OF FOREVER (2019)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 14 ½” x 6 ½”

When I tossed out the old container of paints used to do the cover painting for WORDS OF RADIANCE, it landed upside down in my wastebasket on a piece of paperboard I had been using as a palette for something else. 1/2
Elric stands on an outcrop of rock with skulls at his feet. He wears a black hooded cloak trimmed in gold and jeweled bracers. He cradles Stormbringer as the length of the runesword, glowing purple, extends well above his head. Below him water spills frothy onto the shore but as it stretches back, placid and glassy, it gives way to erupting vents of lava.

Cover illustration for FRIDAY by Robert Heinlein (Del Rey) 4/4

Book cover for FRIDAY by Robert A. Heinlein published by Del Rey

Upon exhibiting the painting, I received numerous requests for the model’s phone number. While I did pose someone in a jumpsuit to study the fabric and folds, the face and figure are from my imagination and Mr. Heinlein’s! 3/4
Rough color concept featuring Friday in the pose for the cover painting. The egg shaped viewport is defined. Her wardrobe lacks the zipper pulls. A circle of light emerges from behind the planet over her right shoulder, but there is no moon over her left.
michaelwhelan.bsky.social
The attendant details support her and hint at these other aspects: The planet where she settles down in the end (the center of which is at her heart), the egg-shaped window (motherhood), and, of course, the zipper pulls (her vibrant sexuality). 2/4
Figure detail from FRIDAY featuring a woman standing in front of a gold trimmed porthole that looks out on space. The zipper of her jumpsuit is pulled down to her waist exposing skin and a hint of her breast. Close detail featuring Friday staring directly at the viewer with blue eyes, prominent and glossy as they reflect the light. The collar of her denim jumpsuit is flipped up. The zipper pulls on her chest pockets have tipped ends that make them look phallic. Over her left shoulder glows the crescent edge of a moon. Red patterns, a sign of civilization, shine on the dark face.

FRIDAY (1982)
Acrylic - 30” x 20”

Robert Heinlein does create memorable characters!

Not even halfway through this book, I had a nearly photographic image of Friday in my mind. By the time I finished, I felt confident about the substance and approach my painting would have. 1/4
A woman in a blue denim jumpsuit stands in front of a view of space as seen through a gold trimmed porthole. The central zipper of her outfit is drawn down to her waist exposing bare skin. Her short cropped, sandy blonde hair has a slight curl. Her eyes reflect vibrant blue set in a gaze directly forward. The silhouette of a planet can be seen in the round viewport behind her. A star emerges from behind the planet and flares above her right shoulder. A moon with bright crescent highlight hangs over her left shoulder.

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

I sent the art to them to reshoot, and the next day someone called me up to say, "Where's the ship? It seems to have turned into an egg!" 4/5
Background detail from INTANGIBLES featuring an arch of orange rock on a smooth sandy beach symbols float in the air from a hand mirror, inflatable boat with oars, a loose coil of rope, an owl skull, and a broken ladder. Figure detail from INTANGIBLE featuring a man crouching on the shore with one hand resting on his knee and the other palm up reaching for a triangular glass pyramid. He is naked with uncombed brown hair and beard. His snub nose, close set eyes, and pronounced jaw suggest a step back in evolution. Other symbols swirl around him in a Fibonacci curve, including an hourglass, a trilobite fossil, an egg, a tilted Erlenmeyer flask, a conch shell, a red glass heart, a spherical space probe, and the planet Earth. Behind him, waves roll frothy onto the shore.

My answer was to paint the spacecraft on removable tape. When I got the painting back, I peeled off the ship and restored the piece to its intended state. In the interim, the book company decided that their transparencies weren't good enough. 3/5
Altered version of INTANGIBLES with a spaceship in the place of the egg so it could be used for the book cover illustration.

He was interested in seeing if the painting could be made to work as a cover, and indeed it all worked out. The only glitch was a little submarine/spaceship object that had to be included. It was needed to make the painting work as the book cover, but I wanted to keep the egg in the painting. 2/5
Preliminary sketch of INTANGIBLES featuring the same primitive man crouching on the shore, but the arrangement of symbols is different and tree branches jut out of the sand. A comet arches overhead arcing down toward the full moon hovering on the horizon.

INTANGIBLES: DREAM AND DISILLUSION (1989)
Acrylic on Canvas - 24" X 48"

When I got a call about a book project, an Arthur C. Clarke short story collection titled Tales from Planet Earth, I told the client that I had already set aside the month to work on a personal project. 1/5
A primitive, bearded man crouches naked on the sand as white cresting waves roll in to gently lap the shore. With palm up, he reaches out toward a triangular glass pyramid surrounded by a hazy ring of light. The prism is one of many objects that swirl in the air to form a Fibonacci curve around him. The symbols include an hourglass, a trilobite fossil, an egg, a glass heart, a broken ladder, and an owl skull. Orange rock forms a natural bridge behind him. Through its arch, the luminous moon hangs low in the sky.

I don’t know why you would want to over paint watercolors with acrylics, but sure, if you can make it work, it’ll work. 😉

Any changes done to a painting already finished and sold [as this one was] must be made digitally.

I used Photoshop.

For changes done before about 1990, they were done in whatever medium the original painting was done in, usually on the actual artwork, sometimes on an overlay.

Did you change the art directly or do an overlay?

Bray is a historian at Rutgers who received death threats after landing on Turning Points USA's Professor Watchlist. As a result, he announced he was moving to Europe. And then this happened.

This kind of harassment and abuse of scholars is Charlie Kirk's legacy and it's only getting worse.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

As I observed in my Substack Round Up this past week, the endgame of the military strikes against drug cartels in international waters is to lay the groundwork to use lethal military force against Americans at home. Pay attention open.substack.com/pub/asharang...
